Accordion Solitaire

accordion is not as well-known as the usual suspects and gameplay is quite different too, less mindless. it's done well in some aspects, with 3 rule sets and a tutorial to ease you into things, plus an informative store page for once. [i]strict[/i] draws one card, make all possible moves before drawing another. [i]relaxed[/i] is the same but can draw more anytime, and [i]free[/i] just dumps the whole deck on you at once, that's the version I was familiar with. looks and sounds pleasant and there's another deck design sold for a single dollar as support dlc. settings-wise there are separate volumes, toggles for hints (valid placement highlight), auto draw (until there's a possible move, haven't seen this elsewhere, neat), reduce motion (shaking decks) and higher card contrast. another handy feature is right-clicking a stack reminding you of what's in it. [b]would be nice to have click to select, click to place as an option[/b], not just dragging, and [b]mid-run saving and seeded play aren't possible either[/b], but it's just a throwaway timewaster, so neither would be an absolute dealbreaker. however, [b]solitaire without windowed mode can't be recommended[/b]. alt+enter does noth…

Accordion Solitaire is a deceptively difficult card game that I found much more strategic than the name suggests. The basic goal is simple enough. I have to take a shuffled deck and gradually combine everything into one stack, but the rules governing when I can move cards make the process surprisingly challenging. I liked that feeling of understanding the rules quickly but realizing that actually mastering them is another matter entirely. The main mechanic lets me stack cards when their ranks or suits match according to specific positional rules. A card can be moved onto a matching card directly beside it, or onto one that has a small gap between them. I enjoyed constantly scanning the layout for opportunities because a move that looks useful now can easily make the rest of the board much harder to solve. The different rulesets are a great addition. The strict version forces me to make available moves before drawing again, while the relaxed version gives me more freedom. That makes the game feel approachable without removing the difficulty. The art is beautiful and it's very satisfying to mindlessly click away. The "free" ruleset is my favorite, where you draw the whole deck at the beginning and try to plan all your moves in advance.
