About Arctic Awakening

Arctic Awakening is a first-person narrative adventure set in the mysterious Arctic North where you and your robotic companion, Alfie, must search for your co-pilot and uncover the mysteries waiting around every turn.It was supposed to be routine. A supply drop to an Alaskan town, auto-pilot on, guard down. You and Donovan were already planning post mission drinks when it happened. The storm. Half the plane disappeared in a flash. Donovan was gone, lost to the howling tempest. Waking from the crash, you find yourself alone, trapped in a frozen wilderness, your only companions a court-mandated therapy bot and temperatures that can cut a man to shreds. Hope for survival lies in finding your friend and maybe a way home. You are Kai, a pilot without a plane, lost in the wilderness of the far north. You’ll need your wits about you to brave the elements, find your co-pilot and get the hell out of Dodge. Along the way, you might just discover what it was that cut your plane clean in two... and what it is making those noises after dark.

Interesting concept, original story, excellent voice acting. This game has it all, except good writing. For about three episodes this game held my interest, it has an interesting setting. But good concepts and good settings always get undone by terrible writing. And this game is chock full of that.

I finished episode 1, I'm really enjoying it. I saw a bunch of comments about how bad the writing was, these were obviously written by people who have never heard an actual conversation between two men. The writing is good, the story is interesting. I look forward to finishing it.

Other reviewers have gone into more detail, I recommend checking them out, too. Ultimately I agree that this game is a bit of a slog, the pacing is awkward, the writing is okay-not-great, and the engaging content is too thin on the ground. I just finished the second episode, and am not sure I will make it to the end. There is very little to truly interact with, and I am collecting things...why? I almost never use them. So far I have used a couple things. For instance, I used knife once. Well, I didn't even "use" it, I just clicked a box telling my character to use it. I often feel like I am not in the world or interacting with the world, I am barely driving a cartoon. Non-immersive. The meditation thing is more of an annoyance, and I don't have any meter or anything to inform me when I am getting to a point of needing it. The cairns themselves are spread out randomly, and backtracking to one just doesn't make sense with how slow and boring getting from one place to another is. I don't feel exploration is encouraged or rewarded enough. I get to a location and I think to myself that I could run all over this place looking for Easter eggs, and will likely find nothing, so why bothe…

Absolute DRAG playing this. I had to force myself throughout the entire game. Terrible writing and pacing. Even the world design was quite boring. Not recommended.
