Atelier Agnes

The first 7 or so hours of the game is just grindy combat with panty shots. Then when the more substantial H scenes start, it's a massive disappointment. The H scenes are few and far between, with lots of grind separating them. The scenes themselves are pretty bland with Agnes in generic positions, a shadowy figure, and text describing what's happening. Her mentor, Bell, is just gross as well. Bell is in debt and is essentially whoring Agnes out to the whole village without her knowledge in order to make money. She's totally ok with drugging Agnes with a sleeping potion, then charging someone money to rape her. The constant betrayal of trust by the mentor for a bunch of the scenes just made my skin scrawl more than anything. Then the scenes that aren't instigated by the mentor are pretty disappointing as well. Agnes is portrayed as this innocent sweetheart, but really she's just dumb. People use the barest pretense to molest or sleep with her and she barely reacts to any of it beyond mild annoyance while it's happening. [h1]A Tedious Grind with Minimal Reward[/h1] I put in nearly 10 hours into Atelier Agnes. It seemed promising at first, halfway through, I realized it's just a repetitive slog. Initially the setup doesn't seem bad, two struggling sisters, one sick and bedridden, the other trying to survive as a novice alchemist. Agnes dreams of making a legendary "elixir" (likely a mistranslation of the philosopher’s stone), and she turns to her former teacher for help. Unfortunately, that teacher shows up drowning in debt and starts using Agnes for shady, exploitative jobs to pay it off, usually non-consensual lewd favors dressed as “quests.” Eventually, there’s a predictable turn involving an evil cult, but it’s nothing you haven’t seen before, and the pacing is too slow to make it land with impact. The adventurer’s guild premise initially piqued my interest, it taps into the familiar anime trope of working your way up through guild ranks, which seemed fun, but, it’s just another underdeveloped system. Game is a little grindy and slow, but very well made. The characters are well made and with the patch it is even better. Very good.
