Atlas Wept

I'm going to give this game a thumbs up despite not being able to finish it. This game is a really nice hommage to the Mother series (the most popular / well known of which, in the Western world, is Mother 2 aka Earthbound). It has a lot of qualities of those games and other games that seek to emulate them, like Undertale. As examples of their success: The dialogue is solid and believable, the characters are robust and unique, the world is quirky and uncanny but also feels lived-in and immersive. The combat systems keep the turn-based tropes of their source inspirations but have evolved and abstracted out from them to create different experiences and less tedium and frustration. So why am I not finishing it? They miss on just one (for me, more vital than I realized) key piece. Music. The music in this game is just not on the level of the Mother 2 or 3, or Undertale. It has a bit of the sense of what those games had, but it falls short. I genuinely found myself having to take breaks because the music was so gratingly boring and repetitive that I couldn't handle it. Short Version: Atlas Wept is an incredible game I'll be thinking about for a while. I wish more people knew about this game and highly recommend it. Long version: Atlas wept is a game that clearly wears its inspirations on its sleeve (Primarily Mother 3), but still feels unique and can stand up on its own. The game is split into two parallel stories and I loved both of them and the way they ended up connecting. There were some moments where I connected some points in one story or the other where I actually gasped. I had a slight preference for Dezi's story, but I was never disappointed when the game switched from one story to the other. I also loved the little bits of world building that came out and added some texture to everything. I don't often write reviews, I often forget to do so, but this game is entirely deserving of it, and deserving of however much full price is. More, honestly. This game has such a wonderful story, such a wonderful meaning and message to say, I 100% recommend literally anyone play this. No matter what kind of games you're usually into this game is good enough and has enough in the way of accessibility to be playable, no matter your skill level. The message and story is so good and something more people should hear and experience. My literal only complaint is that there's no quit to desktop button on the main menu screen, and maybe the odd misspelling here or there. But seriously, go play this game. It's worth every penny and every second. 10/10

Really fun game; an interesting expression of a coming-of-age tale I fell in love with the characters and their struggles, always anticipating their next steps into the unknown. It unfortunately comes into a bit of a dragging drought around the end, both narratively and gameplay-wise, but the core of this game is done with a lot of love and ambition. I wish nothing but love and good tidings for the developer, because I can see the experience obtained from this game building into something even greater.

I picked this game up on a whim when it was on sale because it looked interesting, and I cannot recommend it highly enough. The story is heartfelt and the ending was incredibly satisfying and the ending left me close to tears. As for the gameplay, it is quite good. It feels like a the overworld gameplay is simple to understand, and the battle system feels like a combination of the Final Fantasy ATB system with the Undertale minigames to deal with attacks. I recomend this game very strongly.

I just finished my play through of Atlas Wept and although there have been individuals who have reviewed it and compared it to a lesser Earthbound or not good i'm grateful that I was able to play this game of my own accord and form my own opinion with no pre concieved notions or comparisons I throughly enjoyed my time with this game with it being a short but decent length, I enjoyed all of the characters but especially Dezi, Charlie and Gi, and most of all the story and the thematics that lay within the words and narrative , I also enjoyed the gameplay even if the battles at times may have dragged on a bit more than needed the overall mechanics and interactivity of the individual battles such as the timing, shoot em up elements, buffing and de buffing and the switching of physical and magic attacks to weaken and exploit enemy defenses was all well incorporated, I also enjoyed the overworld maps and exploration and their unique design and enviroments overall this game was well worth the price and I advise anyone who has any interest to play this game to give it a try with nothing else to could their judgement and to make that ultimatum themselves I cant wait to see what game the dev…
