About A Dog Story

"A Dog Story" is a story-rich exploration game about love, loss, and letting go — told through the eyes of a dog who doesn’t know she has died. You are Black, a small black mutt who wakes up at the bottom of a well in the middle of a storm. Confused and frightened, she claws her way back to the garden, eager to return to her family — only to find the house empty, her scent fading, and shadows moving through the rain.Across six days and nights, Black roams the empty home and garden, searching for her boy. She watches over the house from unseen terrors, ventures into haunting dreamlike dungeons, and confronts grotesque ghostly creatures — all while holding on to the fading hope that life might still return to normal. But with each passing night, the world becomes more distorted, the memories more fractured — and something in the darkness is calling her back. This isn’t just your average narrative adventure. Between chasing echoes in empty rooms and hiding from shadows that shouldn't exist, you’ll also be answering delightfully absurd quizzes that reveal hidden sides of your personality—even the ones you didn’t know existed.

Key Features

  • Old-school turn-based dungeon crawling
  • Bizarre personality quizzes
  • Loot shiny stuff, equip questionable gear, and go toe-to-toe with a terrifying cast of shadowy spirit-things

A Dog Story by DIG Games is a short, narrative-focused exploration experience that builds its identity almost entirely around perspective and mood. You play as a dog named Black, moving through a quiet, unfamiliar version of what should be a familiar home and surrounding space. The premise is simple on the surface, but the emotional weight comes from what is left unsaid. The game places you inside a viewpoint that does not fully understand what has happened, and that gap between player awareness and character perception becomes the central emotional device. The storytelling is subtle and largely environmental. Rather than presenting a structured plot with dialogue or explicit exposition, the game relies on small details, spatial changes, and the gradual realization that something is wrong. The world feels incomplete, as if it has lost something important, and this absence is what drives the experience forward. Because the narrative is not directly explained, players are encouraged to interpret what they see and piece together meaning on their own. This approach can be effective in creating a quiet, lingering sense of melancholy, though it also means that the story may feel vague o…

I really wanted to like this one. Games with dogs are very much my jam and I liked the art style and concept. Unfortunately, the game itself isn’t in a state to be playable at the time I tried it. Menus are missing exit prompts, there’s a total lack of direction, and the game crashed no less than 5 times within 2 minutes to the point that it’s the first game I actively gave up on. If it becomes playable I imagine it is something I’d recommend; until that happens though I’d give this a pass.

This is the greatest game I've played in my entire life. Amazing story about dog loss mixed with Pokémon. And it tells you what kind of person you are as a side hustle. 10/10

Never completed a game before, and yes... I know it's short. Yet this one made me want to carry on, primarily because I saw how the story was developing, yes it may be short, but it's a bittersweet story.
