BAKERU

BAKERU is a delightful game presumably aimed at the "Shonen" audience of young boys, but which anyone of any age can enjoy. It makes for an excellent action-platformer collectathon generally, but is an explosion of pure "Japanese-ness" that weebs will especially adore. Boiling it down, there are basically 3 core things that make BAKERU stand out: 1) We Have Ganbare Goemon At Home: Basically, since it looks unlikely that Konami will never port their Goemon/Mystical Ninja collection to the global market, or make a new entry in that series, then BAKERU and its absolutely *extreme* level of practically hyper-nationalist celebration of Japanese culture, tradition, myth and iconography makes for a great replacement. It's led by the two head developers of that series (and the rough plot outline is pretty much the same as the first SNES Goemon game), and it absolutely carries on those vibes of 90's platform heroes in a wild and magical colorful pastiche of the IDEA of Japan, not any actual place that's ever existed. This has a very classic PS2-era platformer vibe to it. It's wonderful to control, it's a delight to behold, and has so much content to it! Reached a point and thought "damn that game was short" just for the devs to reveal a ton more stuff to do. What cheeky rascals they are xoxo
