BAPTISM

Even though BAPTISM has great looking artwork and an interesting story premise, the actual contents of the game seem to be lacking. BAPTISM is a kinetic novel, there are no choices, no dividing paths, you only need to read the story to complete it. It can be completed fairly fast, depending on your reading speed, which was a disappointment in my opinion. I wished that it would have gone for longer, as the story was fairly interesting. I don't think I can recommend this game, as the amount of content you get seems too lacking. I guess if you have some cents leftover and you wish to own it, then go for it, but otherwise it's not worth it.

BAPTISM is a very short kinetic novel, and I think the best way to approach it is as a dark story rather than a normal game. I am reading through the story of a religious family living in the western United States, with a madman, a child and a lake at the centre of everything. There is not really traditional gameplay here, since I am mainly moving through the text at my own pace, but I did not mind that because the writing is clearly the main focus. The story has a very uncomfortable atmosphere from the beginning. Religion is not just used as background decoration either. It is tied directly into the way the characters see the world and the choices they make, which makes the whole thing feel much darker. I liked how the game does not need constant jump scares or monsters to make things disturbing. A lot of the horror comes from the people and beliefs involved. The hand drawn artwork is probably my favourite part of the presentation. The character designs are strange and memorable, and there is something almost otherworldly about the way the people are drawn. I think this is a wonderfully sad little story about a family torn apart by religious beliefs and their own singular tragedies. It's beautifully written, and has some excellent art both of the drawn and photographic variety, and wonderful music. The static image of the angel statue that the family has in their home is honestly gorgeous, and I'd even buy it as a print if I could. I also love the design of each of our main characters as like biblically accurate angels with their eyes closed most of the time until near the end, but I don't want to spoil the ending. (I will just say it's not a happy one.) However, I would be amiss to not point out that this is one, just a half hour long, and two, doesn't have any broader "gameplay" so to speak. It's just "tap spacebar and read", but for something like this, and only for about a dollar, I'd say that's more than fine, and it was an overall positive experience for me. It's like reading a short horror story. So if you're looking for something a bit more interactive, this isn't for you. As the description says, it's a kinetic novel, not a visual novel.
