Starting with almost nothing, you will manage resources, assign vital jobs, and expand your meager settlement into a thriving, fortified town. Players are deeply divided on Bastide. Supporters praise its unique atmosphere, environmental storytelling, and the developer's recent renewed commitment with engine upgrades and bug fixes, seeing potential for a strong final release. Critics, however, argue the game suffers from significant optimization issues, gameplay bugs that impede enjoyment, generic design, and a development pace that feels too slow after years in Early Access, with many recommending established alternatives like Banished instead.
I have been playing city builders for about two years, and I want to start by pointing out something important. Bastide is an Early Access game, which means it is still under development and should not be judged as a finished product. It is also important to keep in mind that some city builders are made by large teams of specialized developers, while others are built by much smaller teams. This naturally impacts how fast a game grows, how much content it has, and how polished it feels. It is also one of the reasons why the price is lower. Players who have experience with games like Banished, Ostriv, or Manor Lords and expect the same level of depth will probably not be fully satisfied at this stage. The foundation is clearly there, but the game still needs more content and further development. On the other hand, players who are new to medieval city builders, or simply want a lower-priced entry into the genre, will likely enjoy it. The price makes it an easy game to try without feeling like you are taking a big risk. I will not repeat issues that many other players have already mentioned, but I do want to highlight something that, for me, is a major positive. The game gives you the …4 found this helpful
Wow! I haven't been THIS upset by a game in literally YEARS. I got this key for free, and I STILL feel ripped off. This game is super ugly, runs unreal engine ,so it's hyper unoptimized, especially on older hardware like mine, and it's generally so generic, it's just not a good or fun game. Go play Banished instead. It blows this game out of the water, AND it's got a decade of mods behind it. There's nothing of interest here.1 found this helpful
Still is well short of being an enjoyable game to play. Far too many playable issues to want to continue playing. Dev needs to get into the basics of the game & fix the errors before worrying about "new" stuff.1 found this helpful

While it is still being updated, after 6 years there should be a better game experience. There is an experimental map that keeps glitching (I dont have a high end machine but it is capable) that has more basic needs than the establised game, ie in the exp copper ore & charcoal give me tools where as in the standard game (and the tutorial advises the same buildings to start regardless of map) i need coal & copper ore, build a bloomery and then charcoal & copper ingots turn into tools - this seems backwards to me! I like that logs taken from the field by labourers can go straight to a construction, not just to the stockpile & then moved again. for the Devs: include a farm management building, no need for 5 ppl per pasture when 1 building can over see multiple. also more graphic as to the farms cycle... Could be a very good game but how long will it take... hope the Devs succeed
This game is incredibly unique, and environmental. It captures the loneliness of the wilderness better than almost any game I have ever played. It languished for quite some time because the developer had other priorities. However he came back and has been working on it feverishly. Upgraded engine/graphics, many refinements, bug fixes, etc. It's really becoming one of the best evolutions of a Banished-Like game there is. It's absolutely worth a buy, and is surely heading for a very solid 1.0 release!
