Block in the Lock

Block in the Lock is a compact but surprisingly substantial logic puzzle game built around an unusual approach to controlling pieces on a grid. Developed by Petorio and Peter Hofbauer and published by Peter Hofbauer, it takes the recognizable foundations of block-pushing puzzles and changes the usual relationship between the player and individual pieces. Rather than selecting and manipulating blocks separately, directional commands affect multiple movable blocks simultaneously. This single rule gives the game much of its identity and creates puzzles where understanding how every object will react is more important than simply finding the shortest route to a destination. The main objective involves arranging blocks so that they correspond with the required lock pattern. Early challenges provide an accessible introduction to synchronized movement, but the difficulty increases as layouts become more elaborate. Since blocks respond together, moving one toward its intended position may accidentally send another in the wrong direction. The player therefore has to consider several trajectories before committing to an action. Walls and environmental barriers become important strategic too…

This is possibly the most convoluted Sokoban ripoff I've seen in a while. "Block in the Lock" is a mimimalist grid based block placement/pathing puzzle game from Itchio, with a nearly unique gameplay goal. What do you do in the game? Like Sokoban, you're moving blocks around to reach a target area. Unlike Sokoban, you're moving a whole bunch of blocks all at the same time, and bumping into objects will make the group of blocks change their positions relative to each other... and that's the goal. You have to bump the blocks until they meet the target shape (kind of like a key and lock, if that makes the title make more sense), then finally move your finished shape to the matching target. Whew. Well, none of that adds up to what anyone would consider a cutting edge, professionally developed PC gaming experience. Here's another case where Itch failed. They have like, ONE job... to act as containment to prevent poorly made amateur shovelware from leaking out onto platforms where gamers might see them and lose hope in the gaming industry. I really like games with simultaneous movement and this game delivers that on every single stage. I had a real blast with the first two worlds of the game, however the difficulty ramped up quite dramatically. It went from being a "hmm I wonder if this would work? Yes!" To “Oh darn the 10th idea I had is also wrong”. I don’t know if it’s quite BABA Is You level difficult but it’s definitely not casual. There are a lot of new mechanics introduced along the way that interact interestingly with simultaneous movement. Thus it’s not just a simple ever‑increasing difficulty ramp, but also entirely new things to figure out. Furthermore, everything is taught in what I consider to be the ideal way: by example.
