Bubsy: The Woolies Strike Back

[h1][i]“I'm not angry, I'm just disappointed.”[/i] ~Mark Darcy, Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason[/h1] Bubsy's back! And so is Black Forest. And it is... kinda awesome, really. I mean, come on. We all know Black Forest for bringing back The Great Giana Sisters. And it was, like, an epic comeback. I know that lots of people who only had personal computers back in the day will call it blasphemy, but the original Giana game was just a crappy Super Mario Bros. clone. Everything that was good—aside from, maybe, the surprisingly neat soundtrack—was stolen, while the rest was just haphazard level design with the odd enemy placement, occasional glitches, collision issues, and so on. It was a messy game made with only one goal in mind: to make money from somebody else's hard work. Reminds you of anything? Yeah, the original Bubsy, while not being [i]that[/i] messy until the Game Boy version of its second installment (yes, Bubsy started to become a mess before the infamous Bubsy 3D), was still just a not-so-good clone of Sonic the Hedgehog. The greatest game to ever exist. 10/10 WILL play again

[h1]Nothing went wrong, but nothing went well either[/h1] A modern revival of a mascot platformer from the 90's almost nobody asked for, this 2D installment doesn't really do anything you haven't seen before if you're at all familiar with the genre. To start with the things I liked, you can pan the camera in any direction with the right stick, a feature I wish was implemented in more 2D platformers nowadays. Controls are much tighter so you should have a lot less issues lining up jumps even if they're much more simplified and lack the depth of other games in the genre. I never had issues with enemy visibility. There's a tutorial level at the start, but unless you're going for 100% it's entirely optional. The one new move that was added is the pounce, which I personally didn't enjoy using very much. This hurls you in a rather unpredictable manner, resulting in missed jumps or accidentally hitting something you didn't mean to. I only ever used it when I absolutely had to, such as the final section in the first level requiring you to pounce through breakable blocks over a pit of water which was the only part of this entire game that gave me trouble as I kept hitting the ceiling…

I think the game is actually pretty fun and gets way too much hate. It's very simplisitic 2D Platforming fun in my eyes and Bubsy is kinda goated for all his funny one liners too, makes me chuckle. Obviously the budget for this game was incredibly small and you can tell! Still I don't think the graphics look that bad and the music is okay as well, but yeah the presentation is definently really bad... One funny thing I noticed is that from each world stage 1 was by far the worst one to get trough and the last one was always the best. All in all this game is nowhere near purrfect, but I still recommend it! It's pretty nice to get trough and the best 2D Bubsy game. (Which is an incredible low bar to pass of course) So Get this game on sale when you can! (Don't pay full price though!)

Actually bubsy plays really well here. The bosses are kinda tough. But not too tough. I'd play it again sometime

It's not amazing but if you get it cheap it can be fun.
