Bubsy in: The Purrfect Collection

Overall the games are pretty mediocre, but they’ve got charm nonetheless. I don't understand why you can't change controls.

as someone that's loved bubsy since he was a child, people are quick to jump on how "awful" these games are when it's very easy to get a grasp on and have fun with, especially the first and second titles; the only genuine bad game in this bundle is fractured furry tales with its ridiculous "what do you mean that killed me? what actually killed me there? i didn't even get a death animation!" kills and awful physics that leave you wondering what the developers were even thinking when making this one. pro tip to anyone bothering to legitimately read these reviews: when playing 1 and 2 but more specifically 1, make absolute sure you're using the glide feature. it's there for a reason. this helps to avoid the ""unfair"" deaths caused by fall damage and lets you navigate stages easier, faster and gives you more control over where you land in the air. closing off, as a fun little bonus from yours truly: bubsy 3d is not that bad. my only complaint with 3d is the circus vomit music that makes me feel like i'm stuck in a hall of mirrors and every single reflection is a clown i don't remember inviting into my house.

For me, these games are like a... weird pleasure. I know they're bad but I like them anyways and I don't know why. Maybe it's the music.

yayyy Bubsy yayyyyayy

I find these games fun to play in short bursts and not to complete. From what I remember Bubsy 2 might be the best, but I've yet to play the storybook one. The games are quick paced platformers akin to Sonic, brought down a little by some inconsistent hitboxes, and a lot of unavoidable obstacles since you can't see very much of the screen at once and your acceleration is absurd. I think the latter can also be attributed to games like Sonic but that's saved through the ring system. I believe later Bubsies at least allow for multiple hits, and most of bubsy 2 isn't designed for you to outrun the camera so this design issue is lessened a bit. Bubsy 1 also has a weird physics thing when jumping on or near ramps saves your direction of motion as if you're on the ramp that makes it a chore to play and feel good. Bubsy 2 has a lot more variety. I played some of the gameboy bubsy and despite all the built in warnings against the game, I think it's still a better designed game than the first. Bubsy 3D is famously panned, I think most reviews only show the first couple levels but it is genuinely interesting, and they try a lot of things that kind of make you think on a meta level …
