Update: The developer has updated to game to address some of my concerns. That is *very cool*. 'Easy Mode' has been added, which is still very hard. RE: Unapproachable Controls: Slight turns are now possible, and a fun drifting mechanic has been implemented. This is a big help. RE: Powerups and road hazards look similar. Helpful icons have been added over power ups that help differentiate them from hazaards. RE: Death walls. The walls of the arena electrocute you, and cause damage to your car. A front end collision with a wall is basically a death sentence. This is still a frustrating way to end a match. Carsteroids is coming along well, but it still feels like an early access game. It's not quite fun yet, though it definitely has the potential to get there. I am giving this game a positive review based on my experience with the developer, and my confidence in the future of this game.9 found this helpful
One of those true hidden gems on Steam, which absolutely deserves more attention.6 found this helpful
Carsteroids is one of those games you want to play when you come back home after a long and stressfull day. It brings you back to one of those titles that made the history of videogames. You jump straight into action, and it leaves everything under your control. Initially it could be frustrating because it's quite challenging, but this is the factor that after few days playing I started to appreciate. Videogames should be though, you're supposed to suck at the beginning and get better with practice. Then it becomes very rewarding. I was also impressed about how every match feels different. I played the 1st level many times and it felt like a new level, where I adopted a different strategy. Opponents seems quite smart, they seem to adapt to the player's strategy rather than following scripted patterns. Music and sound effects are well made, they are not too distracting and definetely have that retro touch that helps Carsteroids to stand out compared to other similar videogames. In terms of improvements, I would love to see a bigger map and the option to drive different type of vehicles that suit different styles of playing the game, like a tank (slow but with high HP), or …5 found this helpful
Ignore the Obey The Fist review on this page. That guy is a no-nothing fool who does not understand PC games in the least, despite acting like an expert. This is a very fun and well-designed game that is a throwback to arcade games of yesteryear without being beholden to the rules of the past. The inspirations of Asteroids, Smash TV, and the original GTA games are pretty obvious. It's themed as a futuristic dystopian game show where the contestants are in a life-or-death situation of deadly combat with each other. You drive your car around an arena and attempt to shoot your opponent to death before they do that to you. Simple concept with a refined execution. The thing most people will notice about this game is it is hard. Extremely hard. One of the most difficult games I've played in a long time. It somehow manages to make it seem fair. I never felt like the game was cheating me and my deaths were all my own fault, simply not being deft with the controls yet. I do wish you didn't have to return to the beginning of the current level set you're playing when you die though. There is a lot of heart put into this game and it shines through. Anyone who is interested in arc…3 found this helpful
CARSTEROIDS is, well, nothing to do with Asteroids although that seems to be the gist of the branding. This is just a lame 2D retro top down shooter with a "car" theme, slapped together badly with the godawful Construct 2 construction kit (no coding needed!). Gameplay consists of just lame top down shooting and a bit of "car steering" not unlike the OG Grand Theft Auto (but this has a fraction of the content and style). There's a few game modes but none of them add any interest to an old, dead concept. From a technical perspective, the game doesn't meet basic minimum requirements that most PC gamers expect as standard. There's no option to change the resolution and no useful graphics tweaks. There's no way to ensure this is running at the native resolution of your display. There's no guarantee this game will look right on any PC as a result of this hamfisted design decision. The game features somewhat lazy, simplistic "retro" looking 2D graphics, and it's hard to say if this is due to the age of the assets used, if it's a deliberate attempt for the game to look bad/retro on purpose, or if the assets are just, well, terrible looking. Considering this is being evaluated as a…1 found this helpful
