The 8-bit shmup ‘Changeable Guardian ESTIQUE’, born in the 21st century, arrives on Steam!

About ‘Changeable Guardian ESTIQUE’

Faithfully ported to Steam, ‘Changeable Guardian ESTIQUE’ was created in the 21st century as a completely new title for NES ROM cartridges.Includes both the NES version and the FC version, which have different story. Enjoy printed materials and various visuals in Gallery Mode.

Simple Yet Deep Game System

This side-scrolling shooter features six stages themed after cities around the world. The super-variable robot “Estique” can transform at any time between the “Fighter Form,” which has a small vertical hitbox, and the “Robot Form,” which nullifies terrain damage and excels at recovery. Furthermore, the scoring system utilizing the “Super Weapon” special attack—activated by rapid-firing the shot button—adds depth to the gameplay. With a life system that regenerates over time and the removal of power-ups, the game design prioritizes accessibility. A strategic shooting experience awaits you, enjoyable for everyone from beginners to advanced players.

[後半に日本語レビューあり]
Real 8-Bit Spirit, Both in Gameplay and Pixelart: A Shape-Shifting Mech Shooter
Earth's five key economic cities have fallen to space pirates by the year 2413, and this side-scrolling shooter puts players in the shape-shifting mech Estique to take them back. A single button swaps between a slim-hitbox Fighter Form and a terrain-immune Robot Form, and clearing all six city-themed stages comes down to reading when to use which. This is a genuine 8-bit title, built to actually run on real Famicom/NES cartridge hardware. The team behind it carries credits going back to the Aleste series, Zanac, Psychic 5, and Dragon Spirit, and that pedigree shows in how the hardware's old limitations get turned into deliberate stage and visual choices. The finished cartridge reportedly made the rounds at arcade cabinets before word of mouth carried it to Steam, and this release is a faithful port of that original build, with the same development sensibility carried straight onto the screen. The core loop stays lean: a shield meter replaces a traditional lives system, and at any moment players can trade a bigger hitbox for a better shot at recovery, or a smaller hitbox for les…

Excellent collection! The Steam release includes both NES and FC versions of Changeable Guardian Estique as well as an early prototype of the game. Normally, I'd say "who cares!?" with regard to having various versions of the same game but the differences are made clear by the presentation. One cool aspect is that the NES and FC versions have different storylines. It's also worth noting that scores from both versions feed into the same online leaderboard. I'm usually skeptical of modern shmups made for NES because I assume they are either clunky or simply "Nintendo hard" but was pleasantly surprised to see how slick and accessible this is. It's absolutely worth checking out if you're either a shmup or retro enthusiast.

A game primarily about resource management, just as much as it is about dodging bullets at least. You'll be shifting your priorities away from saving your bombs as get-out-of-jail-free hypers for survival as you memorize the stages, instead opting to rely on the trickier to use but higher scoring 'wave cannon' esque attack which nets more resources in the long run and greater opportunities to earn points. What's important to note is that there are no extends in this game, not in the traditional sense. It's game over after being shot down just once (although you're allowed to continue either from the beginning of the stage or the boss if you've reached it). Every 80,000 points, however, will give you the opportunity to refill your bomb stock and restore some of your shield bar instantly. Difficulty begins to thaw with aggressive and confident play and rewards you with a seat near the top of the online scoreboard. Without getting into the other differences between the two changeable forms and the different weapons, there's already quite a bit going on here for a Famicom title. And speaking of which, the game looks and plays great considering the hardware it was designed for. If I had…

This retro shmup is full of charm. It isn't designed with neat modernized progression like a Tyrian, Jamestown, Drainus or Zero Ranger though, so expect the usual classic (and to some, perhaps archaic) arcade experience. It does have some accessability features, like I saw a 'continue' option on the title screen, so you can probably start from the level that you died on. There's a rewind feature as well (which disables your score if you use it).

It's a really good NES homebrew. For my personal tastes, it's second only to Gun Nac on that platform. It's simple and good. Nice presentation. The super weapon mechanic is fun and well-implemented. The difficulty is fairly balanced. My only disappointment is that the transforming mechanic didn't feel very important.
