Background Story
It is 128AD. Emperor Hadrian announces a major festival to celebrate his first ten years as Roman emperor. The main attraction is a chariot race spanning the entire empire from Rome to Helvetia.

Famous charioteers from across the vast Roman empire including Greece, Egypt, Judea, Carthage, Hispania, Gaul, Macedonia and Britannia have assembled in the Eternal City. Spectators in their thousands are streaming into the Eternal City for the inaugural race in the Circus Maximus.

The air is tense with excitement and anticipation.

The night before the first race, one of the charioteers from Judea is found murdered in his quarters. The charioteer had been tortured and crucified to the room’s window. An unknown woman’s body is also found on the floor.

The head of the emperor’s Praetorian guard, Quintus Octavian, suspects Rome’s constantly feuding noble families of masterminding the murders. Emperor Hadrian is deeply troubled by the murders. He fears a bloodbath in Rome and in restive Judea. It had only been a few decades since the Roman legions destroyed Jerusalem, the Judean capital and crushed the Hebrew rebellion. The emperor fears another uprising in Judea which could spread to the other conquered Roman colonies.

Emperor Hadrian asks Quintus Octavian to take the position of the murdered Judean charioteer and represent Judea in the upcoming chariot race.

As Quintus continues his investigation, he is drawn inexorably into the murky world of Roman politics. Quintus has to solve two problems at the same time. He has to keep winning each race to stay in the Championship. He also has to solve the twin murders without himself becoming the next victim……..

Watch intro which lasts 5+ minutes and cuts off before its' conclusion. Start my first race, the AI pull ahead. The AI swap positions with each other off screen. Catch up with said AI, and they are in a perfect line, no swapping of positions. But, still shows AI swapping positions on the side bar? Insert confusion. Pass some chariots - shows me in last position. Pass all chariots, cross the start/finish line first, tells me I lost. Insert more confusion. Restart race... The AI start climbing up the scenery and doing doughnuts. Then I fall through the world, and the game stutters to only 2 or 3 fps. Restart race again... Eventually win the race - Proceed to read comic/story/plot? Let's try out multiplayer! Can't sign up - can't log in - can't play multiplayer. Uninstall. I give this 10 horse apples out of 10.

This is truly a masterpiece of the gaming industry! A very dynamic, fast and beautiful action rpg bagel with elements of strategy, crafting and visual novel. The graphics are made at the highest level, you can enjoy it for several hours in a row and not even notice it. A wonderful game design is complemented by an interesting story of the main character, everything is done in the best traditions of ancient drama. The very spirit of antiquity in this game is present in every detail, from lighting to dust that flies from the wheels of chariots. I boldly recommend this game to you all, and also suggest nominating it for the game of this century

If this were properly patched, it could have been a decent budget game with quality art for the included murder mystery plot. Sadly, the latter quarter of Chariot Wars still contains major bugs that used to be present through the entire game, wherein the AI competitors can pass you on the leaderboard and win the races while in actuality being far behind you. I spent far too many times replaying those last races to earn the final achievements for story mode, only finding out later on you're better off placing worse on the track as the AI then thinks you maybe deserve a chance at coming in first on the rigged placings. Note those of you considering buying Chariot Wars for an easy 100% would be best to avoid it, as it still contains achievements for the multiplayer mode which hasn't worked in a looong time due to it requiring connection to a server the developer has long since taken down.

After getting this game as a gift, I now want to pay my friend for getting it. I also want to pay him for getting himself a copy because I now have a seriously dangerous urge to get into a car crash. This games CPU has an IQ worse than its fps as they will slam the walls cheeks harder than Jordi El Nino. The worse thing about this though is the 5 minute intro. The only reason we all played this is because of the lore. 11/10 PS if you're into 500cc mario kart, this is for you.

You may have come here, like I did, remembering an okay chariot racing game on a console in the past. You may have felt that the criticism shouldn't deter you. After all, how bad can it be? It is dismal. The menus are crap, the controls are either WASD or arrow keys with space bar for "turbo boost". The difficulty is pretty high but not in a good way. I won't bang on about this but if you grew up with Roman tales and wanted some authentic chariot racing, look elsewhere.
