Choice of the Vampire

Reviewing (mostly) every game (or DLC) in my library, part 477: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️☆☆☆☆☆☆ (4/10) [i]Choice of the Vampire[/i] is one of the earliest games in the CoG franchise, and I'm a big vampire fan. The fact that I ended up refunding this is kinda a bummer. The premise is super compelling: you awaken as a newly made vampire in early 19th-century New Orleans, a city alive with music, sin, and revolution. Over the decades, you navigate moral decay, racial tension, and immortal politics, shaping both your personal fate and America’s emerging identity. It’s ambitious, historically rich, and dripping with atmosphere. And yet … for all that potential, [i]Choice of the Vampire[/i] feels strangely lifeless. The writing is elegant and the history is fascinating, but the story itself forgets to make you, as the player, matter. It wants to be a serious historical epic and a personal vampire story, but in trying to balance both, it ends up doing neither particularly well. The writing is undeniably good—sometimes even beautiful—but it’s sterile. You can admire it from afar, but it never lets you in. It's an atmospheric, literary take on vampirism that doubles as an American historical commentary.…

This game has enjoyable story where your choices actually feel impactful with interesting characters and the writing is good, these things together would make for an awesome game. However there's more The game has a lot of paths which while great, makes 1 playthrough very short. And the last thing which alone regardless of anything, makes this game a complete trash. The overall story consists of 4 volumes, the base game consists of volume 1 and 2, there is a dlc that gives volume 3, and there is another one which gives volume 4. Each of these dlcs cost the same as base game. So as to say to buy the full game/complete story you have to pay 3x times the base price.

This is not a complete game. It only allows you to play 2 chapters before requiring the DLC, which is 5.99, then another DLC for another 5.99. The content is not worth the headache of requiring the purchase of 2 extra DLC that it isn't upfront about. I wish I read the reviews before I purchased this.

I found it entertaining and well-paced.

I love this series! Shout out to the writer. What brilliant creative writing. I hope that another volume comes out, one of the best CoG's of all time!!
