Chroma Blast

"Chroma Blast" is a poorly made minimalist 2D twin-stick console-like shooter (my KB+M doesn't have twin sticks so perhaps this got launched on the wrong platform) What do you do in the game? Twin stick shooting with some "upgrades" and customisation... but the quality is so low here it's just not worth the bother. This game features very lacklustre minimalist "art" for graphics instead of anything remotely contemporary. I'm sure the "developer" thought this would come across as "artistic", but it doesn't, it comes across as "really lazy". Yes, contemporary 3D graphics take a lot of time and effort to create. That doesn't mean it's okay not to bother! Developers must try to understand that gaming is a visual medium, and gamers spend a lot of money on high end gaming rigs for a reason. And that reason is not so they can look at lazy, phoned-in half efforts like this. This game is fairly dated at 8 years old... and even back then it looked old and busted compared to contemporary, professionally made 3D games of the same period. Chroma Blast is a fast little twin stick shooter that keeps things pretty simple. I am dropped into an arena and have to survive waves of enemies while constantly improving my weapon setup. The main idea is easy to understand almost immediately, which I think works well here because the game is much more interested in quick action than trying to build some huge story around it. I can move, aim, shoot and keep going until I eventually get overwhelmed. The weapon system is probably the part I enjoy most. There are 31 different weapons to work through, and the game lets me build up a colourful arsenal as I progress. That gives me a nice reason to experiment instead of sticking with one attack for the entire game. I also like that the weapons can change how I approach a wave, because having a different attack available can make a familiar situation feel slightly different. It is not an incredibly deep system, but there is enough variety for a game this small. The enemies are also kept fairly straightforward, with six different enemy types and a boss to deal with.
