Chromatic (2017)

"Chromatic" is a very weak minimalist survival shooter tied to a needlessly annoying "colour matching wheel". This is basically like if you were forced to play the worst game ever, but also, an interior designer smacked you in the face every time you didn't choose an action that fit the current decor zeitgeist. The best part about this game is the developer once thought it was okay to charge money for it. This has some really mediocre looking graphics that will understandably be a turn off for a lot of gamers, and it's a big contributor to the failure of the game to attract gamers despite having no up-front cost. Gaming is a primarly visual medium, and if developers want to succeed, they must understand that it's not an area for compromise. You deserve better than compromises. It's free... now, but it wasn't before. The developer was charging $1 USD for this. Price barriers, especially on low quality products, can be a direct cause of failure. It's a nice gesture for the game to be given away for free, but it also tells us that the game wasn't good enough to succeed as a paid product. Chromatic is a fast arcade game built around a pretty simple idea, using colours to survive waves of enemies in space. I control a Chromacore and have to destroy hazards by choosing the opposite colour, while trying to keep everything moving quickly enough to build up big combos. I like how easy it is to understand because I can start playing almost immediately. There is no complicated story getting in the way, it is mostly about reacting quickly, choosing the right colour and trying to survive for as long as I can. The colour mechanic is what makes it more interesting than a completely standard survival arcade game. I have to keep an eye on what is coming towards me and react with the correct colour rather than simply holding down a weapon and shooting everything. The game has more than 50 different hazards that are introduced through increasing difficulty, along with boss fights that give me something more demanding to deal with. I also like the combo system because it gives me another reason to stay accurate instead of only worrying about surviving. The pace is probably the biggest strength for me.
