Coin Commander

don't let the presentation fool you, [b]coin commander[/b] is an excellent deterministic tactical combat game. it means there's [b]no randomness[/b], chance to hit (and mostly miss), nothing like that. you always know who will move where next, who's gonna attack whom and who will die. the story is as follows: [i]'you have been named the new commander of your people. however, coin is limited, and you need to defeat all enemies at any cost.'[/i] that's it, gather your army and do your best. every level is played on a square grid. the right half is occupied by enemy units and using as little of your money as possible, you can put your units on the left, setting the direction you want each to face, as they only move in a straight line. then hit the 'start battle' button to see how it all plays out. it's [b]turn-based, but you don't control units directly[/b]. stopping the battle means units resetting to their starting positions, and after a while a convenient [b]fast-forward button[/b] appears. You can try beating it quickly, like I did, or go for maximum efficiency and replay the levels multiple times until you find the perfect tactic. On each level you start with a limited amount of coins on a 5x10 map. "The enemy" has already positioned it's troops and you have to wisely choose yours so that you can spend the least amount of money. You only place your soldiers on the map and you do not select their movement paths- they all move forward but can attack different squares around them, except for the archer who is stationary. You need to be careful as friend fire is ON for both you and the enemy. You win when all of the enemies are defeated, regardless if you have any living troops left. It's simple but difficult to beat with a good score. My 3 complaints are: - the game sometimes crashes on start, but works well after re-starting - the visuals are very simple, which might put some people off - you can increase the game speed but only 10 seconds after you have began the battl…

Very nice chesslike tactics game that explores every ounce of of fun from the concept and doesn't overstay it's welcome.
