About Commands & Colors: The Great War

HexWar Games has partnered with Plastic Soldier Company to bring you a digital version of Commands & Colors: The Great War board game. The game allow players to portray important engagements throughout WWI history. The battles focus on the historical deployment of forces and important terrain features of trench fighting in scale with the game system.

The scale of the game is flexible and varies from battle to battle. For some scenarios, a few infantry units may represent an entire wing of a larger battle, while in other scenarios a unit may represent just a few brave soldiers going over the top. The Command card system drives movement, creates a “fog of war” and presents players with many interesting opportunities; while the battle dice resolve combat quickly and efficiently.

The Combat cards add an element of suspense and will challenge players to coordinate their use in a timely manner. Overall, the battlefield tactics players will need to execute to gain victory conform remarkably well to the strengths and limitations of the various types of WWI units, their weapons, battlefield terrain, and written history.

Commands & Colors: The Great War, developed by HexWar Games and published by Hunted Cow Games, is a faithful digital adaptation of the well-known Commands & Colors tabletop system, reimagined to portray the brutal, methodical nature of First World War combat. Rather than attempting to simulate the war at a grand strategic level, the game focuses tightly on tactical engagements, emphasizing command limitations, terrain control, and the grinding reality of trench warfare. From the outset, it positions itself as a deliberate and cerebral experience, one that values planning and restraint over spectacle or rapid-fire decision-making. The core structure revolves around a series of historically inspired scenarios drawn primarily from the Western Front, including battles that evoke the stalemate, desperation, and incremental gains characteristic of the era. Each scenario places players in command of infantry, machine gun units, mortars, and artillery, arranged across a hex-based battlefield that models trenches, wire, shell craters, woods, and open ground. Victory conditions vary, but most hinge on careful territorial control and attrition rather than sweeping maneuvers. This design rein…

The game freezes after several turns on the AI turn: the AI doesn't make any decision, doesn't move, doesn't attack etc. Reloads of auto-saves or own saves don't help, re-installations of the game don't help, file auto-check via Steam doesn't help. On the same mission on my first try the game froze on AI's turn 12, on my second try on AI's turn 8. I can not understand why. I asked for a refund but got rejection as I played more than 2 hours (completed 1 mission for both sides and read manual). DO NOT BUY any game from HexWar Games (Hunted Cow Games) as this problem with the game freezing had not been solved for almost 10 years and developers simply have abandoned the Community long ago. These developers are money scammers: they sell beautiful design with completely bugged AI.

This is infuriatingly buggy. When it works it doesn't work quite as the board game intends, and then it keep breaking every so often anyway (freeze, AI won't do anything, strange results that don't match the dice, etc). DO NOT BUY.

Love the boardgame of this, and really enjoy this game WHEN it works. Which isn't often. It is so buggy it's almost unplayable, the number of times the game hangs when it is the start of the computer player's turn is beyond ridiculous, I;m averaging three resets per turn which just isn't good at all. I know it's an old game but seriously, it's got such a great base to work from and it shouldn't be hard to patch properly but they just haven't got it right.
