What Steam players say

Players praise Ctrl Alt Ego as a creative and well-crafted immersive sim with solid level design, sound, and multiple approaches to objectives, though some note it takes several hours to move past its linear tutorial section before the full experience opens up. The main complaint centers on the game's focus on puzzle-solving and stealth-hacking mechanics over creating a truly immersive living world—some feel the setting lacks the atmospheric presence and sense of survival that defines their ideal immersive sim experience.
It's a fun game that's worth checking out but begins to overstay it's welcome a bit by the 8th chapter.2 found this helpful
It took an hour or two for this to click for me, but when it did, it was pretty good! Get past the intro (armed with only a shotgun and floaty controls) and get yourself a disk to choose your own upgrade, and it will really start to shine. Maybe you want stealth options, or just to blow things up. You'll have plenty to work with after getting one of these, and will get plenty more options if you look for them. I appreciate that it's open and very difficult to truly softlock yourself, yet still challenging and engaging. It's a delightful little imms\ersive sim with interesting tools and physics to work with. Even those floaty controls I mentioned are fine, actually. They fit what you're playing as (a disembodied ego piloting floating or big and clunky robots), and even work to your advantage sometimes if you want to try some silly (but clever) maneuvers. Pick up the vacuum and/or aeronautics and your otherwise-grounded bug can get pretty agile for a low juice cost! I was fairly thorough in cleaning out enemies and exploring, yet still missed tons of upgrades and hidden things. I'm sure there are plenty of paths I haven't seen. I was pleasantly surprised by how unpretentious the p…
The best way I can describe Ctrl Alt Ego's gameplay is that it's kinda like Geist on the Gamecube only instead of scaring soldiers to possess them you're possessing various robots and machines. As an immersive sim it is incredibly enjoyable, offering multiple ways to solve whatever is in your way, be it by being sneaky, causing chaos, finding a way around, or using the environment to your advantage. Has a good bit of replay value as there's secrets and achievements I missed on my first playthrough. The story can be a bit hard to follow initially but it starts to make more sense as you keep going, to no fault of the writing as it was full of humor and neat reveals. Overall really enjoyed playing Ctrl Alt Ego and will go back to it fsure.

Great Immersive sim in the vein of System Shock and the Original Deus Ex, but if you like any of the genre I would definitely give it a try. Stick past the prologue, which I initially bounced off and you'll find an interesting and clever game just a little ways in with a just the right kind of thinking that let me play at any level and still have fun.
