About Dark is the Void

Dark is the Void is a JRPG-inspired roguelike that forgoes a story in place of pure combat, loot hoarding, min-maxing, and grinding out levels and trait points on your characters. It features 24 playable classes, each with dramatically different playstyles, special mechanics, and custom UI elements. These classes touch on the standard MMO roles of Tank, Healer, and DPS; but each class also has a high level of hybridity, blending different types of support seamlessly into each. Fast paced, real-time, menu-driven combat forms a backbone for intense tactical battles.
  • 24 Classes, each with unique play styles, mechanics, and UI's
  • Fierce, tightly balanced, menu-driven battles
  • Play in real time, or auto-pause as you issue commands
  • MMO-style 'Threat' mechanics and Class roles
  • Multiple difficulty settings to support everything from casual to the most hardcore enthusiasts
  • Play with Keyboard, Mouse, Controller, or Touch-screen
  • No story to slow things down; just pure gameplay
  • Customize your character’s appearance with the in game editor
  • Explore a vibrant 16-bit Pixel-art world
  • 300+ Hand-made items

To me, the game is like a puzzle where I am trying to find the optimal way to utilize the powers of the character. It is not the sort of game I have played before, but I have enjoyed it. I like playing it causally as a way to relax, but I could see playing it intensely at the higher levels of difficulty as well. There is not much story to the game. I do wonder why I am fighting the variety of things and what the story is behind my characters, but the game is focus on the tactical battles. The game did crash on me twice during my play, but has not happened since the first two stages.

Stupid fly RPG right here!! Takes some learning and getting used to all the MMO-type slang but has a ton of RPG elements that come together nicely, like character development, tons of equipment slots and fun and frantic combat! (or relaxed if you choose.) Lots of potential here, would love to see even more classes! (Spoiler - it's got a BUNCH of classes already! :P

The game is a challenging, thorough, and extremely fun game to play. I had a lot of fun from customizing characters to the intense battles. Would definitely recommend for a fun challenge!

This game scratches a very particular JRPG nostalgia itch in me that I can't entirely compare to another game. It's been over 6mo since last update and seems to be radio silent, but - what's here is fun for me, and it's a great time killer, at least! I hope to see it further continued - the bones of something good are here, and there's enough 'game' to easily justify the $10! Important note: have yet to find an explanation or indication on "Skillchain", an in-game mechanic that is central to a few characters' ability kits - there are enough characters who do not centrally use that mechanic that you can play without it - I have, even at my current playtime - I just wish I could use the characters with it and have a reasonable understanding of what they're going to do and how to best do it. Skillchain update note: For any who see it, when you activate a skillchain ability on an enemy, it'll fill up a bar beneath the enemy for the 'wait time', once it fills it quickly drains - you need to land the next skill chain between when the bar filled up and when it full drains out. You can trigger/start casting the next ability at around 50-70% filled up to cut down wait time. The same c…

I normally do not do reviews, but this is too hard to pass up! Great Early Access game. The tutorial was well done. Lots of patching and improvements have been made since initial launch. It's very fun!

I received a free key from the Developer to check this out. I played it for just under 2 hours. It's an interesting title that's very light on story, aside from the general "stop this bad guy by doing this stuff," and focuses more on combat. It has a bit of a MMO aspect for the battles with the general idea of having a Tank, Healer, and DPS as members of your team. I think it's a novel idea, and the game does a good job of putting things together. It does suffer a bit when your healer is just focused on healing, or your mage has such long cooldowns that they are only helpful in short bursts. The worlds feel mostly similar, and I can't say I had a single boss fight that I enjoyed as they just felt like I was off to fight a sponge absorbing monster. To be fair, it does capture the essence of old school JRPGs as that's often how combat would feel. Graphically the game looks like it'd fit in with the late NES era of JRPGs, and that's quite ok. There is a pretty varied bestiary which helps keep things from getting too stale.
