Denpa Nightmares

It's an emotional but heartwarming visual novel. It has nice art and music. The game is short and free so its worth a read.

Denpa Nightmares is a very strange little game, and it is probably best described as a visual novel that does not really want me to do anything. I am placed in a forgotten world with a girl named Dirtie, and the whole point is simply spending time with her and talking about the past. There is no big quest, no combat and no traditional goal waiting for me. I just click through the conversations, choose responses and slowly get a better idea of what kind of place I am actually in. That sounds extremely simple, but the lonely atmosphere gives the game a surprisingly interesting feeling. What I like most is the way the game handles its central idea of forgetting and waiting. Dirtie is not just there to give me information or move a normal story forward. A lot of the experience comes from sitting with her conversations and thinking about what she says. The game can also break the fourth wall, which adds another layer to some of the stranger moments. I like when a small game is willing to be a little uncomfortable or confusing instead of explaining everything immediately, and Denpa Nightmares definitely has that quality. Amazing short game, felt good to get all but one of the achievements without looking it up.

A really sweet and short story, Dirtie is such a cute girl you cant help but sympathize with her. The hidden messaging and morse code bits are fun to discover too
