About Downstairs

✦ AI summary

Play as James, a former FBI agent searching for his missing girlfriend Mary through dark corridors filled with puzzles, cryptic symbols, and an unreliable flashlight that flickers at the worst moments. Rely on atmospheric tension and environmental storytelling rather than cheap scares to uncover the truth behind Mary's disappearance and survive the horrors awaiting you.

SUBJECT
James, a former FBI agent, is on the hunt for his best friend Mary, during which some very bad things happen to him, he gets injured, his eyes go black, he loses consciousness. We don't know if our main character, who witnesses many different events like this, will be able to achieve his goal, find Mary or solve the events, it's up to you, good games in advance.

CHARACTERS IN THE GAME
-James
-Marry
-Unknown

Mary is James's girlfriend, we can be sure that he will do whatever he can for Mary, but will you be able to do it? In our game, there are many puzzles such as opening locked doors, finding passwords, solving passwords, of course, of course, your flashlight turns on and off by itself from time to time because our flashlight is faulty. The most frightening thing in the game will be the ambient sounds, even if there is really no "jumpscare" in any way, the environment you find will make you nervous enough.Dark corridors, hidden passwords, different symbols and so on.

✦ AI summary

Players criticize the game for significant performance issues, graphical glitches, poor translation, and reliance on asset store materials that make it feel inauthentic and lazy. However, some players praise its atmospheric horror elements, spooky tone, and engaging puzzle-based gameplay despite its technical shortcomings, though the overall consensus leans heavily negative on quality and execution.

I was intending to review this as a UEVR mod game since it utilizes the Unreal Engine 5.1. Unfortunately, performance was so bad that I couldn't get it to run at even 45 fps even when lowering all the in-game graphical settings on my RTX 3080. I even lowered sampling to .65 and it was still running poorly, plus I noticed a host of graphical glitches. So in all fairness, I decided to play this in Non-VR and see what the deal was. Unfortunately, performance was still bad as I would get variable frame rates from 25-110 fps from one moment to the next. I still noticed several graphical glitches, in particular, when turning I would notice several screen tears. Then I came across a game-breaking bug when I pressed E to interact with one of the notes in the car garage of the girlfriend. I could no longer get rid of the text. It was impossible to close. This game should be listed as Early Access. It's not in a playable state in my opinion.

"Downstairs" is a short asset flip looking Unreal first person puzzle adventure game where you wander around what look a lot like a collection of Unreal Marketplace/Fab assets and click around on some puzzles. It's thankfully short, but when the best thing about your "game" is that it goes away quickly, this is not a flex, it's a problem. The game graphics look better than you might expect, but that's just because it looks like some or all of them are "borrowed" from asset stores or wherever. Gamers can tell... and it comes across as insincere. There's also the old adage that those who lack the budget and talent to make their own game assets usually lack the budget and talent to do the rest of the job of game development properly, too. You're forced to sign a highly questionable yet legally unenforceable End User License Agreement... for such a relatively low effort, low quality product, this comes across more as a delusion of grandeur than anything else. This agreement includes questionable requirements that may attempt to revoke consumer law protections that gamers expect to have, which is also highly problematic. Developers must learn they are here to serve gamers, not co…

Not great. Bad translation and the gameplay is clunky and not fun at all.

Haven’t finished playing it yet, but made it to the lockers. (will try to come back and finish reviewing afterwards as well though) There are some graphical issues i’ve encountered personally, but putting that aside, i’m really enjoying it so far. I’m not too good at puzzle games, yet still find myself playing them sometimes; adding in horror on top of that i knew i had to give it a try it! After getting past the password locked door in the beginning it got spookier and i kept psyching myself out. The atmosphere both visually and audibly sets the spooky tone so well. I’m enjoying it a lot so far and am already referring it to my friends to play. I would highly recommend this game, even just to try it out in your spare time! :)
