"Dragonflight" is basically an abandoned Early Access VR tech demo that was at some point, possibly (hopefully) intended to be a real game. I say hopefully because we give the developer the benefit of the doubt... they charged money for this, but didn't deliver a real game, it's a short tech demo "experience", only mildly interactive. What do you do in the game? Almost nothing. This is basically a virtual rollercoaster... you're on the back of a dragon, wave your arm around to point your weapon at the enemy... it shoots automatically. Almost no gameplay, and this is incredibly short even for a VR "art experience". It's best to approach this as if it isn't a game. But the problem is that this WAS sold as a game, a direct abuse of Early Access. This is not okay. The graphics in this game are passable, but could be better. And while it's vital for any game to have impressive visuals (gaming is a visual medium, after all), there's more to a game than just the graphics. To be worth a gamers time, the game must match top tier visuals with top tier gameplay, and that's not happening here. Dragonflight takes one of the most naturally appealing concepts for virtual reality and builds an entire experience around it: becoming a dragon rider and taking to the skies over a hostile fantasy world. Developed and published by Blackthorn Media Inc., it is a focused single-player VR action experience rather than a sprawling fantasy RPG or detailed creature-management simulator. Its main attraction is the sensation of flight itself, combining enormous airborne creatures, fortified locations, environmental destruction, and aerial combat in a format designed to make players feel physically present in the saddle. Flying is easily the centerpiece of the experience. VR gives altitude and movement a much stronger sense of presence than a conventional third-person camera could provide, particularly when soaring above mountainous terrain or descending into confined areas. The environments are designed around this feeling of scale, featuring castles, misty wizard towers, valleys, mountains, and canyons. Dragonflight is a free VR game that gives me a pretty simple fantasy. I get to ride a dragon and fly around a large fantasy world while fighting other dragons and attacking things on the ground. It is not a full RPG and there is no huge story for me to get invested in. It is much closer to a short VR action experience that is mainly trying to make riding a dragon feel exciting. I think that basic idea works pretty well, especially when I am actually in the air and moving quickly through the environment. The flying is easily the best part for me. I can steer the dragon through mountains and valleys, fly around castles and move through areas filled with enemies. There is a nice sense of speed when I dive down and then pull back up, and being able to look around while flying makes the VR setting feel useful rather than just being there for the sake of it. I also like that the environments are destructible, because flying through a battlefield while arrows and attacks are coming towards me gives the experience a little more energy.
