About Dread X Collection
Horror, at its core, is primal. You don't need a multi-million dollar design budget or advanced realtime bullet physics to make something scary. You just have to have an idea that is raw, and the honesty to execute it.
P.T. perfectly illustrates this point. It takes place entirely in one hallway. It didn't have complicated AI. There weren't a dozen characters to design and model. Hell, there weren't even that many scares. And it was absolutely terrifying. It distilled the concepts of the ill-fated Silent Hills into a dense moment of terror. It was its own compact experience, and a glimpse into something much more.
Many games have tried to imitate P.T. in content. A million spooky hallways with a trillion collectible notes. Some of these are fantastic. But what about that concept? To distill your dream project into something condensed, raw, and real?
That was the question posed to 10 brilliant creators. Make a P.T. for the horror project of your dreams. Both a game on its own, and a window into a much larger world. Make it raw. Make it real. Make it a reflection of your own fears. Make it in just 7 days.
And they did. This is the Dread X Collection.

Since this game is a collection of 10 small games. I'm going to talk about each one of them individually and then give my final opinion. The order of the games is the order I played them: Hand of Doom This didn't look like an appealing game initially with the old-school style it has (I'm not nostalgic towards that). But the game surprised me in a pleasant way. I liked how the spells were used. I would have never remembered all of them by heart, luckily they're all written in your grimoire once you discover them. The length seems just about right. Let's say you tackle 3 'mini-dungeons' to collect what you need for the finale. The dungeons themselves were pretty creative, and I liked how they remained bite sized. Also, I liked the voice actors. The one thing I didn't like was the framerate, it was 25. I'm not sure it's intentional but it did make me a bit dizzy. It took me roughly 40 minutes to complete Hand of Doom. Don't Go Out That was such a random game that is super short but also took longer than it should have due to trial and error. You have nine days to survive through a turn based battle system with cards (each day is one turn). Now don't get your hopes up, it's more of…3 found this helpful
⏳ I like the idea, but the first is already a rough one. Projects from events like these are usually free for a reason, and this is a collection of demos / concepts of truly mixed quality. For every okay one, there are 3-4 bland or downright bad ones. Some are completely unclear, time-wasting, unbalanced, dull, or simply broken. It's terrible when the worst thing in a horror game is the fear of losing or getting stuck, because you'll have to go through this tedious mess again. You can find significantly better projects on itch, fully completed, and even for free. Future collections may be better, but testing was clearly not a priority in this one. Maybe this is wrong, but polishing patches are necessary here. After all, this is a paid product.3 found this helpful
Overall decent collection of indie horrors. "Shatter" and "The Pony Factory" in particular had excellent atmosphere, whereas "Summer Night", "Don't Go Out", and "Hand of Doom" I enjoyed for their creative approaches to gameplay. "Outsiders" was probably my favorite overall though, with lots of small scares to keep things tense, and puzzle & clue solving to keep you engaged (plus the awesome ending). "The Pay is Nice" and "Mr. Bucket Told Me To" were both a bit meh for me personally. The concepts were there and not bad, but they did feel a little unfinished compared to the other titles. And then there's the last two... "Carthanc" -Most frustrating. Gameplay. Ever. "Rotgut" - This one was just buggy and lame af (i'll admit some of the graffiti was funny tho). So, a mixed bag I guess, but still, it was really cool to just try out a bunch of short games, and I look forward to playing more Dread collections!3 found this helpful
It's weird. Really weird. It's one of those cases when the same project features amazing games and demos, and something that's absolute ass. So let's break down everything and see for ourselves! Summer Night - worth playing for sure. One of the best projects in this compilation. Won't spoil anything, go and play it. The Pay is Nice: Yeah, sure, the pay is nice but the game has nothing of interest to present, nothing at all. I didn't get it, at all. Carthanc: The author KNOWS how to make good games, so why Carthanc was made into the most annoying game is still a mystery to me. Mr Bucket Told Me To: It's good, it's actually one of the most hilarious cases of crazy horrors where the premise is already dumb and insane. Heavily recommend. Hand of Doom: ORTH ORTH ORTH ORTH UR UR. Heavily recommend. Hilarious The Pony Factory: Outstanding, and quite fun. Heavily recommend Outsiders: I hate it, I hate it a lot, but only because of my own personal experience with it. The game is 50/50, it would have been much better if it wasn't so damn annoying. I really wanted to finish all the games and get the achievements for them. And do you know what? Outsiders ALWAYS turned off when the endin…
Ok so I am giving this a thumbs up only because I want to support indie artists but this collection probably won't be for most people. This is the equivalent of the 48 Hour Film Festival but for game developers. 7 days to make a game is interesting but the lack of polish shows. There are some gems in here but also some absolutely insulting garbage. To save you from wasting your precious life, here's a curated list of what to play and what to ignore. GOOD: Summer Night, The Pony Factory, Shatter MEH: The Pay is Nice, Mr. Bucket Told Me To, Hand Of Doom, Outsiders, Don't Go Out BAD: Carthanc INSULTING: Rotgut
shatter, hand of doom, don't go out, summer nights, and the pony factory are the highlights here. shatter my beloved, you are so cool <3
