Embers Adrift

I wouldn't recommend this to anyone. Let alone an MMO veteran that misses the good old days when mmo's didn't hold your hand. I'll explain why this is ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ below. Very poor performance. My computer is kind of a beast and can barely run this game without my temps going way up. Even with all settings turned down to the minimum, this software, manages to cause my room and PC to overheat. With these graphics being so ugly, even at maximum graphics, I'm dumbfounded how bad the performance is. Most of the assett's in this are unity asset flips. I've seen the starting map in other games. Absolute nonsense. It doesn't add anything new to the genre: Miss the old school days? When MMO's didn't tell you where to go and what to do. Great. You can get that here, along with half a dozen other MMO's that are free to play and do the same exact thing. So why buy this? I'm not sure....maybe improved graphics? Not Recommended — 3000+ hours, multiple characters at max level I really wanted to love Ember's Adrift. I've leveled 5 characters to max level, so this isn't a first-impressions review — this is coming from someone who's genuinely invested time into the game. The core gameplay loop is solid, but the elephant in the room is how the devs approach development right now. It feels like they've burned out on their own game. Leaving detailed in-game feedback or bug reports seems to serve only to tank their morale, which makes it hard to help them improve things without feeling like you're kicking a dead horse. Content updates are slow — and when they do arrive, they're often not substantial additions. Weather effects, transmogs, cosmetic pets — none of it moves the needle on actual gameplay, progression, or endgame content. Meanwhile the stuff that would actually retain players (new zones, class balance, meaningful endgame systems) barely gets touched. I don't think this is a bad game. FROM DEVELOPER / BTW do no buy it has its moments.. but ZERO FUTURE... On population: This isn't for lack of listening or lack of trying. Thousands of games launch on Steam every year, all competing for the same finite pool of player time. We have zero marketing budget, so word of mouth is basically our only channel, and word of mouth doesn't do much when the population is already low. Steam sales bring in a wave of new players, but retention is the problem we haven't cracked in four years. So you make almost NO money from sales (the population shows this), but too small for word of mouth. When you sell pretty close to ZERO copies a year, an limp along on ' optional subs '.. Going Free to play would cost you what exactly? Because no sales, is better then ' more people who might stick '.. an pay a monthly o.O The logic is baffling.. instead its the same few people playing.. an the game is effecetively dead. I think its more then ' no marketing ', I think you ' lack the ability to critically think about finances '. So keep it walled off, maybe get a lucky bite here or there. Honestly, Ibaxus just hits different—like, it literally flips people. They turn into straight-up villains, no cap. I’m really praying this game still has a future, tho. I keep seeing little squads roll in, and a few of them actually grind all the way to endgame. Sometimes a bigger crew pops off, and like, a couple of them are clearly built different—destined for endgame vibes. But the rest? They just don’t have the grind in them. Solo queuing in this game is brutal, fr. And once you hit endgame? The OGs just squad up and absolutely terrorize the lone wolves. It’s toxic.

*Edited after recent developer comments - DO NOT BUY - * Well written story, fun combat, crafting system and a lot of niche loot to make different builds. But I wish I had never picked it up because you will only walk away from playing either (a) quitting when you realize how much of a brutal, demoralizing grind it is to level or (b) making it to max level and being disappointed and frustrated from the devs refusal to make QoL changes to attract/maintain a larger player base. Game is stuck in a negative feedback loop due to how hard it is to level. There is no XP gain from regular quests. Only way to XP is to kill mobs and get repeatable kill X mob quests from a bulletin board, which once you hit level 25 or so only give 1% XP per turn in (max level is 50). This translates to around 350+ hours to to get to max level of pure, unfiltered, mind numbing grinding. This is designed to be done with a full group of 6 people to get an XP bonus. Incredibly rare to have while leveling, and even if you get it, it won't be around for long.
