"Empire of the Gods" is an ancient game from 2008. It's a whopping 17 years old at the time of this review. The game lacks support for any modern gaming display resolutions (or widescreen monitors), hasn't been modernised or updated to run smoothly on modern gaming PCs. Despite this lack of modernisation, it carries a pretty high price tag for such an ancient game. This seems to have been put on Steam as a nostalgia gouge, or just a cash grab to try profit from abandonware. Another notable thing here is that despite this being such an old game, it was ported to mobile app stores as a mobile app. From a technical perspective, as something that now qualifies as a mobile app, this doesn't meet basic minimum requirements that most PC gamers expect as standard on modern PC games. It's a very simple static 2D game where you "build a tower"... which involves tapping on a variety of cards. Each card you tap on costs a little of one of the four resources, but gives you quite a bit more of the other. You need as much as you can to tap on the final card to build the tower. Upon learning the severity of the self-inflicted damage, I became almost suicidal. Keep in mind that just a few months before this, I was the happiest man, with no history of depression or anxiety. I had never experienced anger outbursts, nor was I the type to break down and cry, but I was in a tough situation that truly prevented me from seeing the light on the other side. Developed and published by Lonely Troops, the game takes a deliberately minimalist approach, focusing on logical planning and efficiency rather than sprawling empire simulation or narrative spectacle. Set against an abstracted vision of ancient Egypt, it asks players to grow a civilization under divine influence through careful manipulation of resources represented entirely through cards. The core gameplay revolves around a turn-based card system in which each stage functions as a self-contained strategic puzzle. Players manage four primary resources—often interpreted as power, wealth, faith, and population—and use cards to convert, boost, or balance these values to meet specific objectives. Every card play matters, as turns are limited and inefficient decisions can quickly lead to failure. Rather than overwhelming players with complex mechanics, Empire of the Gods derives its depth from the way simple rules interact, encouraging forward planning and a clear understanding of cause and effect.
