About ZERO PARADES: For Dead Spies

✦ AI summary

ZERO PARADES: For Dead Spies is a noir espionage RPG where you play a burnt-out intelligence operative navigating a shadowy city filled with competing factions, uncovering secrets through subterfuge and deduction while your psychological conditioning becomes your greatest weapon. What sets it apart is a gritty pressure system where failure is expected and consequences reshape your story, letting you customize your operative's abilities and even bend the game's rules themselves.

Brilliant, burnt-out, possibly cursed – you play as operant Hershel Wilk, alias CASCADE. Five years ago you led your team into the abyss and have been haunted by your failures ever since. Now you've been recalled for a mysterious assignment that may give you a chance to prove yourself again.Uncover secrets hidden in the lost corners of the city and within your own mind. Navigate a murky world of potential informants and adversaries. Pass skill checks to uncover their true motivations through subterfuge, violence, or deduction. As an operant, there are multiple ways to approach every problem - your choices and methods will be your own, and so will the consequences.Find yourself thrown into a three-way struggle for cultural and ideological power, played out across an unforgettable city. You'll go up against international bankers, foreign techno-fascists, psychic doppelgängers, a paranoid TV presenter, a man with a box for a heart, and dozens more. Everyone you meet has their own agendas, beliefs, and secrets for you to uncover and turn to your own ends. In ZERO PARADES, even the world itself is a character with its own secrets, traumas, and miracles for you to discover.Operants subject themselves to years of psychological training to hone their minds into their greatest weapons. Do you favor animal-like reflexes, a philosophical approach, or a different cover story for every occasion? Through Conditioning, you'll turn the deepest aspects of Hershel's identity into potent abilities and unlock new paths forward. You can even change the rules of the game itself.Pressures simulate the physical and psychological toll of being in-theatre. Exertion pushes dice rolls in your favour – just remember that you’re gambling with your life. Keep your Fatigue, Anxiety, and Delirium in check or deal with the long-term repercussions. In this line of work you're going to fail way more often than you succeed. That much is expected of you. What matters is how you pick yourself back up. If the dice don't go your way (and they won't) you'll have to improvise and hope the consequences are ones you can live with.

✦ AI summary

ZERO PARADES: For Dead Spies is a spiritual successor to Disco Elysium that players describe as delivering a similar experience with a new spy-themed story and setting, though opinions divide sharply on whether that's a strength or weakness. Supporters praise its rich world-building, compelling characters, and engaging narrative, while detractors criticize it for feeling linear, formulaic compared to the original, and less impactful in its dialogue choices. Some feel the game is worth experiencing for fans of the first game, though others consider it a step backward overall.

They should never have fired the OG Disco E team. This is at least two steps down in every way. Super linear, skill checks don't really matter. Also, woke for no reason.

TL;DR it's Disco Elysium 2.0, in a good way! ZA/UM has really got a hang of this point and click trippy spy game thing. If you played DIsco Elysium, you're getting that exact thing here but a different backdrop, story, and political ideological adventure. No real upgrade on visuals or art design compared to Elysium and honestly, if you're familiar with how to play Elysium you will probably not spend nearly as much time contemplating the diverse set of dialogue choices as you would in your first play through of Elysium. I found myself being able to identify which dialogue options would lead to useful or experience building threads and so the risk of choice didn't really present itself the way it did when I played Elysium. Instead, I was sort of out playing the chess match a few steps ahead and found myself snowballing with experience, outfits, conditions, and side quests rather quickly through my 24 hour playthrough. In that sense, Zero Parades does fall a bit short in terms of excitement. That said, ZA/UM is still crushing it in terms of world building, characters, dialogue, and voice acting. Those aspects alone had me burning >5 hours per day on the playthrough. It is ove…

I finished this game months ago and I keep thinking about it. Its world is rich, its plot lines pay off, and it's full of weird and wonderful characters.
