The demo to this game is actually what sold it to me. I wasn't a huge fan of the gameplay trailers or the screenshots, which left me with the impression that this was a sort shooter with horror elements. That's not really what this is. The game is slow, plodding, and thoughtful; more like a walking simulator with exploration, puzzles, survival elements, and a bit of combat. The atmosphere is like a combination of Half-Life, Terminator, Metro, and, of course, Atomic Heart, but instead of playing some badass soldier, you're a boy genius with rather minimal cybernetic augmentation, albeit you are surprisingly durable for the sake of gameplay balance. The game has some fairly minimal "indie jank". Some of the puzzles are obtuse, and I needed a guide on a few occasions. Combat is awkward, though this is likely intentional since you're not a soldier or even an full grown adult. However, the story and music are good, and the world building is excellent. I really thought the inclusion of the enigmatic sonic weapon towers was a nice touch, too. Hail to the Rainbow is more than worth the price.2 found this helpful
Absolutely incredible, this game is a stark contrast from the Demo I played a few years ago. The art style, atmosphere, graphics on 4k Ultra + and the fact it runs like butter makes this one of the most immersive games I’ve ever played. Absolutely genius mechanics that I’ve never seen before puts this game nearly S tier in my book.2 found this helpful
This is one of those games that gets better the farther you go. While there's occasional jank it rarely takes away from the immaculately immersive experience of this game. And it has 3 endings! I am genuinely floored one dev (yes and contracted musicians / voice actors) made this. It was a wild ride.2 found this helpful
Wow, this is a good game. It has style, but most indie games do. What others don't often have is good gameplay variety, good writing, good music, good pacing, good car mechanics, environment art, level design, props, interactions, and the list goes on... The style is something mixed between Simon Stalenhag and some Russian novels. Some of the more industrial elements remind me of Wolfenstein and Viktor Antonov's work, may he rest in peace. The location and prop design reminds me of Half-Life. The pacing is a bit more like Life is Strange though -- there are exploration beats, puzzle beats, zen beats, and others. This game is a cultural time capsule of what it was like to grow up in the Eastern Europe in the 90s and 00s. Lots of us were fans of sci-fi literature like this, Stalenhag, Half-Life, and so on. The props and the music also match that. I suppose one thing different from the real 90s/00s is that in this universe, the Soviet Union seems to have continued its technological march beyond the space race. Then something happened -- what that something is, I still don't know. But I can't wait to find out.2 found this helpful
1 found this helpful
Really awesome game. The ambiance and vibes are immaculate. The visuals, the music, the story, the characters, the Soviet uchronia, the robots, the snow, the brutalist architecture... I love it all. The fact that it was almost entirely made by a single developer is both impressive and puts games like Atomic Heart and its cringey, horny fridge to shame. I do agree with other reviews that it could guide the player better, as I found myself rethreading some areas in search of the way to move forward on more than one occasion. But I don't think it's as bad as some people make it out to be. My main pain point is the use of genAI for some visuals. The rest of the game is so fantastic that it really sticks out like a sore thumb. That being said, I need to reiterate that this game was made almost entirely by a single person, so I can at least understand where they're coming from. Either way, easy recommend and Hail to the Rainbow.1 found this helpful
