About Encounters: Music Stories

A challenging rhythm game

Encounters: Music Stories is a two-handed rhythm game featuring cute characters. Each character plays a different musical instrument, and you must clear the way so the characters can advance and reach the final encounter platform. You can train each character separately, but to win a level you must coordinate both hands.

In this game, precision in rhythm and coordination are key. If you enjoy challenging rhythm games, you'll love it. If you're unsure whether this game is for you, give the three levels available in the Steam demo a try.

What makes this game special?

Have you ever played any rhythm game where you had to simultaneously handle two different instruments, one in each hand? This game is challenging not only due to its unique spin on the genre, but also because there is a game mode where you can play entirely in the dark. Trust your ears more than your eyes! Are you brave enough to give it a try?

In addition to its original concept, its gameplay is complemented by charming characters and sweet stories about a wide range of marginalized or underrepresented people, including those with physical disabilities, women in tech, the elderly, and the LGBTQ+ community, among others.

As the developer is also a music composer, music in the game is tailor-made, combining adaptations of classical songs and original music.

It's a cute rhythm game that feels pretty unique in how it presents itself. You can play this with one hand if you'd like, and I'm not entirely sure if it is easier using 2 hands vs 1. Music is a decent selection of classical tunes with some minor adjustments to make it feel a bit new, but overall you'll likely recognize many of the tracks. Before jumping into each of the levels you'll get a little story bit that's rather charming. They aren't central to gameplay or anything, but they're super cute. Gameplay wise, it requires a bit of timing and precision that I just don't quite have. I've dropped it down to easy mode because the format of the game makes it difficult for me to time things appropriately. That being said, I do think the difficulty is fair. The presentation just doesn't work with my brain's capability to do things. The screen is split in 2, which I totally get. But I feel like I'd of done so much better if it was just one screen with a tweaked perspective. There's also this idea you can play this pretty much by ear, but I'm really not sure that would be possible. It probably helps that as you play you start to remember where/when things will happen... But …

As an oldschool rhythm games player (Patapon, Rock Band, Guitar Hero, etc...) I must say that this game has been a challenge for me. At start it may seems to be very difficult but when you trust your ear you'll find out that it's not that hard. Songs are very nice, some are famous classic versions and others are originals. Overall a great game if you like rhythm games, something new in this genre is always welcome, and this is definitely different to the rockbandish rhythm games that we're used to. Here you have to split your hands and for me it's similar to the feeling I had when I started playing drums in Rock Band where you have to coordinate both hands and feet. Highly recommended if you like rhythm games and you're looking for something new and fresh in this genre.
