End Transmission?

End Transmission? is one of those games that surprised me with how emotional such a simple concept can become. I play as Lenna, a teenager who breaks into an abandoned radio tower and starts broadcasting music to a world that already knows it is going to end. I really liked that the game does not focus on stopping the apocalypse. Instead, it asks what people might do with the time they have left. The main gameplay revolves around running the radio station. I broadcast music, take calls from people around the town and manage the mood of the broadcast. I enjoyed this because it turns something as ordinary as choosing music into a meaningful part of the story. The people listening react to the atmosphere I create, so my role as a radio host actually feels important. The music system is probably my favorite mechanic. I can mix different instruments together to create my own soundtrack, then use that music during the broadcast. I liked experimenting with combinations because it makes the radio station feel like something I am personally shaping. It is a small system, but it fits the theme beautifully. Game is super relaxing. Music is nice. However, there are major quality of life issues. For example, if you miss any of the core controls, there is no where to relearn them. I had to rewatch youtube tutorials to learn them. Also I had to discover all these workarounds for the bugs/UX in the game that made it feel unpolished. Things like sitting in the chair randomly switched me to a free camera view. And drop/place on the shelf are totally different controls and game counterintuitively suggests drop control instead of place when the item is highlighted on shelf.

First of all, the most notable thing about this game is the soundtrack, Insane Life is Strange vibes, I easily imagine myself listening to these songs in a roadtrip or laying in a grass field. The music ties in with the whole vibe of inevitability, all good things must come to an end. Endlessly beautiful, and heartbreaking. AMAZING work to everyone involved in the development and creative process.
