Enigmatic Worlds

Long time ZDoom modder (Mayhem Mansion clone maker) creates psychedelic FPS game and sells it on steam. It's pretty good, the new mechanics are taught well and easy to understand, the game can be quite challenging at times. If you like classic shooters with unique settings, this is a great option for you.

I really wanted to like this game as I'm a huge sucker for GZ Doom games. But this one unfortunately just misses the mark. And now it's definitely a skip because you can't activate the console, therefore when the dev updates the game you have to either start all the way over, or never get any of the updates by switching to previous versions. I understand that's a GZ Doom issue, but if we had the console we could just go back to the level we left off on. Also the level design isn't very good. Mostly just same colored similar textures with no real monuments or landmarks. So you're running around the same parts over and over trying to figure out where to go or what's triggering when you activate a trigger symbol thing. Weapons are cool though, when you get ammo for them.

A homage to obscure and Amiga PC games both in aesthetics AND difficulty. Enigmatic Worlds is a Retro FPS game running on a sourceport of the Doom Engine. Developed by Logic Obscure Productions, it follows... someone as they explore exotic and surreal worlds. Fighting weird enemies, using interesting weapons, and collecting things to progress. The game absolutely excels at providing a unique experience through abstract worlds but also feature decently higher level difficulty, especially as someone who's very, very familiar with Doom TCs and Retro FPS games in general. Which occasionally hampers the experience but isn't a complete deal breaker. Gameplay wise Enigmatic Worlds takes place across a few but VERY densely packed levels that generally feature non-linear progression. Most levels require the player to collect certain items to fill up a bar to make the exit spawn and most of the time you're free to collect them in any order you see fit. Which is notable as these levels are extremely hands off, almost Hexen-like but thankfully they're all contained in a single level so it's pretty easy to get your barrings as long as you're attentive to your environment as you explore. This game looks and plays like McDonalds Sprite tastes. It isn't very often that something tries to be weird and *is* weird, while not feeling forced or awkward. The visual language of this game feels as if I am trying to travel through an old Macintosh computer, but still feels very novel - I don't know what a lot of the symbols mean. Sometimes you run over a red square and it opens something. Or you find what appears to be, half of a purple intestine. It stays with you between levels. I do not know what it does. I actually, strangely, like this. It feels like playing something genuinely new and different for once. Enemies can behave in unexpected ways but most engagements are not too challenging, it more felt as if (at least through what I think is the second level) that I was trying to ration health. Only beat two levels so far while looking at a third, they seem to be fairly large, sometimes hard to navigate. This is both good and bad, it got a bit frustrating but was manageable in the end and adds to the feel of exploring someplace strange.

Great trippy doom clone with truly enigmatic mechanics that evoke old games where you either figure it out or you give up. Recommend while influenced by your substance of choice.

strange, beautiful, ethereal, and definitely worth your time. certainly just as much an art piece as it is a game, but unlike certain games that try too hard to be close to a certain traditional form of artistic entertainment, this actually has pretty good gameplay to go along with the mesmerizing surrealism and beautiful worlds. Needs a fair bit more ammo and health in the levels on two of the three difficulties, but all in all still great. plenty of complexity in the weapons and enemies, and playing this while high is somehow even better as it potentially becomes one of the most beautiful and ethereal experiences of your life (just not for a first time with the stuff, okay? be careful, don't do too much please, stay away from the REALLY bad ♥♥♥♥ as best you can. sorry tangent)
