About Ex Libris

Midway through the journey of your life, you have found yourself at the gates of the legendary Abbey of St. Theleme, a monastery of great learning and of great mystery. Ex Libris is a library-crawling RPG adventure set in a 16th century monastery, inspired by the writings of Umberto Eco, Francois Rabelais, and Clark Ashton Smith. Built using FromSoft's Sword of Moonlight RPG toolkit (based on the King's Field engine), Ex Libris is a unique retro literary adventure. Explore the monastery and its ruins, learn ancient tongues, uncover lost texts, and unravel the strange threads that bind the obscure history of Theleme and its inhabitants, including yourself. Features
  • 10+ hours of non-linear exploration-based RPG gameplay
  • Hundreds of in-game texts to read, including both obscure real-world texts and new writing
  • Two ancient languages (Ancient Greek and Latin) to learn along with a new conlang, Old Occident

Ex Libris is a curious adventure using the Sword of Moonlight engine. Thoughtfully-crafted dialogue and descriptions await every turn. Clever literary references abound. There are multiple languages to learn, and everything from dialogue-trees to descriptions of pottery begin to change as you unearth each respective language. Combat (so far) is present, but has minimal involvement. Environments are lush and gorgeous for a SoM game, though it seems so many objects in the starting map make the performance of the engine struggle a bit. Music is enjoyable and appropriate and feel fitting for exploring a labyrinthine library full of odd sorts. Worth a play if you're the kind of person that likes talking to every NPC in an RPG.

Not your run-of-the-mill King's Field style dungeon crawler akin to Return to Melanat or Lunacid - Tears of the Moon, but an adventure game with its own lore and world like Trismegistus with heavy emphasis on dialogues and exploration. SoM is a notoriously hard engine to work with, so controls and some of the scripting is a little on the jank side (high resolution breaks ingame text, getting an ending will just exit you from the game due to engine limitations, also better pay close attention to Logos and Physikos stats in the menu) but cooking something of this scale is an achievement in itself.

Goosebumps the whole time playing this. The ideas permeating the game, mood, exploration, the excerpts and the music, everything about this was phenomenal.

Reminds me Aidyn Chronicles. Sadly you cannot sneak past orcs in the snowy mountains in this game.
