Fairyside

"Fairyside" is a huge list of things developers should never do all in one package. What kinds of things? Well, ripping off other games... this is mechanically a ripoff of Binding of Isaac. Another thing you shouldn't do? Use procgen instead of content. Use pixelcrap instead of real graphics. Dump garbage, cringe writing visual novel fanfiction text at gamers when you can't work out how to narrate you story through the mechanics of the game (show, don't tell!). The list goes on and on and on. So, needless to say this was quite a failure here on Steam as the data shows. What do you do in the game? It's basically Binding of Isaac with somehow worse graphics and much worse gameplay. This features really godawful pixelcrap "art" instead of real graphics. It's hard to say if this was because the developer didn't have the skill to do the job of creating 3D visuals, or couldn't afford to hire someone who does, but it also doesn't matter. What matters is that this looks much worse than most other games because of that decision, and that's a major deterrent to gamers. This is a warm, whimsical adventure with cozy quests and a gentle sense of discovery. Its colorful world and simple progression make it an easy game to relax with, delivering a light, uplifting experience throughout.

Listen, y'all, this is a free game. Free. So already, I can't have too many complaints, so I'll just say what I have to here: As an adult cisgendered white dude, I only have so much time in my day that I can take a break from eating hotdogs and watching NASCAR to pretend to be a magical fairy girl shooting slimes with my magic. In fact, I'm going to call that "slime slammin' from here on out. So when I need an excuse to become Shirley, a silly slime slammin' schoolgirl student, I pick up Fairyside for a few minutes. Starting right from the second chapter, you meet some other student or whatever, I don't know, he's a guy named Richard, so I'ma call him ♥♥♥♥. ♥♥♥♥ being a nickname for Richard. Anyway, Silly slime slammin' schoolgirl student Shirley and her friend ♥♥♥♥ gotta slime slam some shrooms in the mystical forest and find these stupid notes left for you by some depressing note writing turds, I'm sure there's a backstory here, but because I'm an older white guy I didn't bother to read them. Fairyside is what happens when a cozy magic school meets bullet hell chaos. One minute, you’re learning spells; the next, you’re dodging death like your life depends on it (because it does). The pixel art? Adorable. The gameplay? A chaotic fever dream. The story? Surprisingly deep. Would I recommend it? Absolutely. Will I be seeing projectiles in my sleep? Also yes.

This game is really fun. Also it ran well on my really old ♥♥♥♥ laptop that I sometimes use.

Fun game with Dungeon-Clearing aspects which I enjoyed! Much easier on controller but keyboard with arrow keys is the only way to play otherwise.
