About Fancy Skulls

✦ AI summary

Blast through procedurally generated levels in this punishing first-person shooter where permanent death keeps every moment tense, and creative weapon mods plus tactical enemy mechanics reward clever play. Stunning art style and wild item combos—from teleporting foes to homing bombs you can weaponize—ensure no two runs feel the same.

Fancy Skulls is a challenging first person shooter with procedural generation, permanent death and distinct art style.
Intense and tactical combat, unique weapon mods and items that change the way you play.
Foes different not only in visual design but also in their behavior. For example there is an enemy that will teleport every time you hit it, or enemy that leaves bombs that home on you, but you can shoot those bombs to use them against it.

Usable items and power ups, like friendly sentry, an eye that lets you transmute items, kite that lets you fly, matchbox that ignites all foes around you, and much more!
Each weapon is different from another, and every weapon can be modded with options that provide interesting game experiences like "walk backwards to get ammo", "12 hits with no misses give you money", "last two bullets in a magazine do double damage", "don't spend ammo while in the air", "shoot lightning bolts with shotgun".

Fancy Skulls, developed and published by tequibo, is a first-person roguelike shooter that embraces minimalism both in its presentation and its design philosophy. It drops players into a sequence of procedurally generated arenas, stripping away narrative context and focusing almost entirely on combat, movement, and survival. From the outset, it feels like a distilled version of the genre—one that prioritizes immediacy and experimentation over depth or long-term progression. The gameplay loop is straightforward but effective in short bursts. Players enter compact, enclosed rooms where waves of enemies spawn, and progression is tied to clearing each encounter before moving forward. Combat encourages constant movement, as standing still is rarely a viable option. Enemies come in different forms, each with distinct behaviors that force players to react quickly and adjust their positioning. Some enemies close distance aggressively, others attack from range, and a few introduce unpredictable elements that can disrupt otherwise controlled situations. This variety keeps early encounters engaging, especially as players learn how different enemy types interact within confined spaces. Weapo…

My ears are still ringing minutes after turning the game off. WHY DOES THE MAJORITY OF ENEMIES CAUSE THIS NOISE

Apparently Fantasy Sculls is open source and free now, which makes sense, because it plays less like a finished commercial game and more like somebody’s strange weekend experiment that accidentally escaped into the wild. It’s a weird little shooter that technically functions, but I never got a clear sense of what the developer was actually trying to make. The movement, combat, and overall feel are all just kind of off in a way that’s hard to describe beyond saying it feels odd and incomplete at the same time. Not broken enough to be fascinating, not polished enough to be compelling, and not fun enough to justify spending real time with it. Even at free, I still found myself asking why I would keep playing. This is less a hidden gem and more a random artifact.

This was one of my first games I got into on steam when I was only free to play a long time ago. This game is a simple little shooter that is fun to play. Not a very hardcore serious shooter game but certainly not a boring shooter game by any means. I find it to be great fun and still play it from time to time over the years. It is free give it a try! 10/10 have played again and again

I collected skulls but one winked at me and started a band with a dancing pumpkin now we tour the afterlife.

Fancy Skulls has a genuinely interesting core loop — every enemy has a weak spot you need to learn, which forces you to actually aim instead of just spray-and-praying like most FPS roguelikes. The abstract art style is weird in a way that works, and stumbling onto a powerful item combo that lets you rocket-jump or slow time makes each run feel fresh. But the elephant in the room is that this game has been sitting in Early Access since 2014 and the last update was back in 2016, so what you see is all you're ever going to get. The content runs thin fast, and knowing the dev shipped another game while leaving this one to collect dust makes it hard to recommend at full price. Grab it in a bundle or at a steep discount if the concept appeals to you, but go in knowing you're buying an interesting but unfinished artifact rather than a living game.
