About Rogue Shooter: The FPS Roguelike

First-person shooters and roguelikes have finally tied the knot! Their offspring, ROGUE SHOOTER, tasks you with navigating a space station run amok. Blast aliens and kick robots in the face as you traverse each level; collecting weapons and gaining experience along the way. How far will you go when death lurks around every corner? Will you reach the 100th level and destroy the source of the station’s corruption? Probably not, but it’s worth a try.

GAME FEATURES:
  • Fast-paced and challenging gameplay!
  • More guns than you can shake a stick at! We wish you would stop shaking it though, it’s making us nervous.
  • Level up and pick from the finest perks this side of the Mississippi!
  • High score charts track your best attempts. Brag to your friends about yours, they surely won’t hate you for it!
  • Play mini-games to hack into secure computers. Just like real hacking!
  • You can battle with robots, aliens, and giant carnivorous plants! You can also battle with your low self-esteem and crippling alcoholism, but those aren’t included in this game.
  • Unlock backgrounds, difficulties and enemy weaknesses.

✦ AI summary

Players appreciate this game's nostalgic throwback to classic shooters like Wolfenstein 3D and Doom, along with its roguelike elements and variety of weapons that encourage multiple playthroughs. However, the game suffers from significant technical issues including crashes, save file loss, lack of controller support, clunky controls, and wall-clipping bugs, while the level design feels bland and dated compared to modern roguelikes, with some finding the sound design grating and overall gameplay experience underwhelming.

It's a really cool throwback to the days of Wolfenstein 3D and DOOM. I'm pretty sure the levels are even rendered in a similar way to Wolfenstein 3D, which is really neat. It can be really hard and as its name implies, it had roguelike elements of randomly generated levels and XP to level up some things like your starting base stats.

I really was excited to play this but the levels are just bland grids, the enemies just run at you mindlessly, the weapons and such feel like the original Doom but worse. It's just overall, I would say, just not a good game.

I would love to love this game, unfortunately it plays like glitchy abandonware. I have to reset the resolution and fullscreen every time I enter the game. I get stuck on walls. It crashes constantly and then I also lose my save file and the intel I gathered towards metaprogression. The keyboard controls are clunky and it has no controller support. With some patches, this game could be awesome and fun... but as it is, every time I give it a second, or third, or fourth chance, I regret it and remember why I don't play it.

I wish the dev would have actively developed this instead of releasing it and immediately abandoning it. I can't recommend it in it's current state when you can get map bugs that do things like put the stairs down in a completely inaccessible area. Really a shame, this could have gotten big.

I finally got around to giving it another chance after 12 years and will give this a light recommendation. In many ways they were ahead of the curve for both the revival of boomer shooters and rogue lites. They understood the basics of what made boomer shooters great as well as understood what makes rogue lites great with the upgrade abilities and plenty of unique guns and gadgets to make multiple playthroughs worth it. Although it's been compared to Doom and Quake, I'd say Rogue Shooter is like Marathon meets 90s/00s Chex Quest with rogue elements. Unfortunately, being ahead of the curve means that this is before games like Hades and Dead Cells were able to fine tune the rogue elements. There's a lot of dated things from the mid-2000s games, such as weapons/armor that degrade faster than paper mache or even not having an actual pause button. The biggest offender however, is the level design. Everything revolves around the same tight corridors which is fine in the first few levels but it quickly causes enemies to gang up on you with no space to crowd control like the classic boomer shooters did. tl;dr It's okay. You've got nothing to lose but a few fun hours at the current pric…
