Fishing Maniacs: The Road to Extinction

Fishing Maniacs (TD/RTS) is an abandoned Early Access 2D mobile app-like Tower Defense game with RTS like elements (you can move the towers around a little, slowly). The game is themed around fishing and your towers are country fishermen (who apparently destroy fish instead of catching them as they swim down the tower defense lanes). The fish amusingly have hitpoints... it looks a lot like this was originally flipped from a generic Tower Defense Unity template and reskinned. The game was abandoned roughly one month after launch and hasn't been updated in 5 years. It blew past the developers commitment to complete the game without any notification or admission of failure from the developer. From a technical perspective, the game doesn't meet basic minimum requirements that most PC gamers expect as standard. While there are options to change the resolution for the game, all this does is scale up the simplistic 2D art assets used to make the game, which makes little or no difference to the graphics quality. I'm not usually a fan of tower defense games, but Fishing Maniacs appealed to me because of the theme, which I feel is generally underused in games. Otherwise, it's a fairly standard TD game, albeit with some twists: the fishermen ("towers") can move around the level, so their speed becomes an important factor, not just when spawning new ones, but also when covering missed fish with existing, fast-moving ones. Now, I'm not much of a real-time strategist, which is part of the reason why I don't play many TD games; simply put, this game, at the moment, is too hard for me. Among other things, I feel that the regenerating fish are seriously overpowered (as they aggro attacks from your fishermen, but very quickly go back to full health), and that the bigger fish have way too much HP. This made the start of many of the levels very difficult; if I was able to get through that, the latter parts of each level were straightforward. Basically, if you can't generate a lot of money early on, you're done. After putting 10 hours into the game here are my thoughts. First off, I want to say that I am NOT a fan of tower defense games. I find them to be rather dull most times, however as a content creator I am willing to give all games a chance, especially when there's a twist to the genre in question. Fishing Maniacs seems like a typical tower defense at first: you buy a tower, place it, and eventually upgrade it. The goal is to defeat the waves of creeps (in this game, schools of fish) before they wipe out your hearts/life points. What Fishing Maniacs does different is allows you to MOVE the towers. Your towers are fishermen, hunters and the like. You can place them, but they can chase down the offending waves of fish. This makes the gameplay more dynamic than your typical TD. Because of this, the game does have a greater entertainment value to people who may not like TD games, while giving TD enthusiasts something new to have fun with. The music is rather peaceful, which helps. What the game does wrong? First off the horrible constant sounds of the towers shooting. An interesting spin on Tower Defense. I have only played it in short bursts as the continual need (at least for me) to move the various fishermen can be quite wearing (in a good way). I know that I will keep coming back!
