Flatline is a 2D platformer that players find mechanically competent and occasionally fun, with praise for its simplicity and the bullet-time mechanic that helps manage difficulty spikes. However, the game suffers from significant technical issues including graphical bugs, UI problems, frame rate drops during precise platforming sections, and audio quality inconsistencies that detract from the overall experience, with some reviewers questioning whether 2D pixel platformers remain relevant in modern gaming.
Before I played Flatline, I had a small pp, no friends, no gf, depression, and no life. These things havent changed, but the game is pretty good
1 found this helpful
From Digipen, we have "Flatline." Students here were clearly mistaught that it's fine to release obsolete 2D games in the 3D era. 3D graphics cards became uniquitous in every single gaming PC ever since the 1990's when the ATI Rage and Voodoo3 hit the scene. Any professional development business that sees a prospective hire who doesn't know 3D graphics became mainstream in the mid 1990's with the Voodoo3 and ATI Rage probably isn't going to give them a job. Bad for the students, and what is this delivering for us gamers in the 3D gaming era? The students got told, as a deliberate joke, that in 2021, PC gamers only want to play 2D retro pixelcrapesque platformer garbage. Seriously, Digipen took a bunch of money off a lot of students and then said this is what video games are like, and taught the students to make this one. A directionless, badly animated platformer with a "Cyberpunk" theme. What I want to know is how Digipen found game dev students who had never seen video games before and never thought to question it when Digipen told them that Nvidia and AMD were fictional businesses and there's no such thing as a "3D graphics card", and also that Wolfenstein 3D is also not…
I encountered some difficulty starting the game with graphical bugs, relying on FluffeyPanda to find the UI where there was none, but playing the game with an invisible player and enemies could only go so far as the first level. I continued on my backup computer, and while it ran much slower, together with the diverse range of sample rates for the music it achieved a crunchy flash game aesthetic that was fun while it was simple. Once I was instructed into tight channels with precise jumps, the frame rate issues started to bear their fangs on me, but the endgame difficulty was luckily more relegated to the bullet time mechanic. The game is a mazer with a pair of mild and slow tempos, and the complexity of the project's design has seemed to disallow them from mixing together too gradually. More confidence with designed failures would have led to more fidgeting away from pitfalls and subsequent frustration, but the movement ability inlaid with the attack has a strong foundation for unique Nerve motivations. Downwell's sense of physics and movement is so fluid and refined to a degree that only a few games achieve; the link between movement and attack is an invaluable concept pulled f…
