Only bought it because I got a coupon for it. Was only appealing to me for the rare achievements. In both cases still not worth it. Gameplay is... functional... but there was a lot that is unclear about it. The overall experience is a bit frustrating with how repetitive and RNG dependent it is (those explosive guys are totally unfair because there is no way to dodge them when you unlock the cage). Didn't like the fact that the runs were under a time limit for seemingly no reason. Also, the controls feel very sluggish and combat is a pain. *Might* be considered fun if there was an endless mode to it so there would be a bit more challenge, give the leaderboard a real reason to exist, and make the achievements a little bit less of a grind to complete, but that's a strong maybe on that one. I know that's not likely to happen at this point, though. Would say it's only 4/10. Consider passing on this one if you come across it.
If you're going to sell a boring, repetitive, and low-effort game, at least have the decency to make the achievements fair. Instead, players are forced to endure broken hitboxes and frustrating RNG. Losing HP just for opening a cage—with no way to predict if it’s a guard, a bomb or a prisoner —isn't a challenge; it's just bad design.
Freedom Fighter is a compact yet energetic indie action-platformer developed and published by Volens Nolens Games that captures the spirit of old-school arcade experiences while weaving in modern sensibilities of score-chasing and precision-based gameplay. Released on Steam in 2017, it tasks players with escaping confinement, freeing other prisoners, and surviving relentless opposition within a tightly constructed 2D environment. Rather than relying on narrative complexity or cinematic presentation, the game thrives on simplicity, focusing entirely on fluid controls, escalating difficulty, and the satisfaction of mastery. It’s a small game with big ambition, channeling the tension and immediacy of classic platform shooters into a minimalistic but rewarding experience. At its core, Freedom Fighter centers around the idea of liberation—both literal and mechanical. You begin as a lone prisoner who breaks free from captivity, armed with only a knife and the determination to bring others to safety. From that simple premise emerges a gameplay loop built on fast reflexes and quick decisions. The player must navigate a sequence of corridors, traps, and heavily guarded zones, freeing other…
Infuriating ass game.
this game is really bad. The controls not being very intuitive is by far the worst part. highly don't recommend this mess.
It's like I was playing baby's first level generator, where you can end up spawned almost always next to a mine/stalactite, and the prison cells can hold suicide bombers because screw you, that's why. Not to mention hitboxes being whack (you can end up getting stabbed/blown up even if you are high above the guard/mine), the controls felt slightly janky and there is no way to normally close the game; you have to Alt+F4 this ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥, I wouldn't call this game bad; it just has so many pet peeves that I don't recommend for more impatient people. God bless those who got the 1M points achievement.
