Game Master Engine

Unfortunately, as interesting as this software is, I cannot recommend it to a serious GM. It's great in concept, and the base tools are good for what you need them to do, but the development of this game has obviously ground to a halt, and the early access tag is so very apparent. The software is fairly unstable, sometimes props and walls you place will randomly vanish or move. The floor system is extremely buggy at the moment, trying to make multi-level maps (the main reason to use a 3D VTT) is exceedingly frustrating and not worth the headache. The actual DM/GM tools are unreliable as well, hiding elements from the players with a fog of war is a basic feature in most VTTs, but in Game Master Engine it is an extremely frustrating task, I haven't actually found a way to do this reliably. Also, as far as I can tell, if you cannot do discrete dice rolls in app. The learning curve for this software isn't too awful, but the in game tutorials are so barebones you'll be forced to watch Youtube tutorials in order to figure out some basic functions. UPDATE: You have to run it at a fourth of the resolution to have a 50/50 chance of seeing the UI if it keeps itself windowed. For some reason when it's fullscreen, it hides the navigation buttons below the screen or behind the taskbar. How do you even code it to be that bad?? Bought this back in 2021, messed around with it. Then forgot about it because there weren't too many robust settings. Launch it in 2026 now that the current campaign is coming to an end and I can look at different platforms to consider for the next campaign. "Hey I have the GM Edition I got ages ago, let's see how it works now after 5 years of development". Did you know that once you click "Create New Map" or access settings, there is quite literally no way for you to go back, exit, or create the map? There are quite literally no buttons anywhere, you scroll to the bottom and it stops, and the only way out of the VTT purgatory is to alt+f4 or stop it from Steam. I wish Steam's refund policy was an either or of "Within 14 days" OR "Less that 2 hours" instead of having to be both because this is Grade AAA UE5 Slop. This software uses Microslop and is very heavy processor and graphics use. you will lose your player base for the fact they wont have a computer with the high specs it needs to run. there are better map making tools and vtt than this. dont waste your money.

the amount of detail and customization is unparalleled

Unfortunately it does not run on my system (specs attached). I know it's not a gaming rig, but this is a virtual tabletop - if your target market is people who want to run tabletop games, why would you require them to have a gaming rig in the age of overpriced RAM?

It is a useful tool for every GM, and I can see its potential, however, I personally prefer to GM in real life with real dice, table, players, etc. Again, I am not dismissing the game's/engine's purpose/potential/usefulness, I am just stating my opinion and preference.
