A challenging platformer that's a little weird, but I like the humor and the soundtrack's pretty decent. I wasn't a fan of the level design though, and the zones felt a bit drawn out. Thankfully, even with the crazy amount of deaths I had, there were a good amount of checkpoints so it wasn't too frustrating. I also really enjoyed the arcade mini games and thought they were fun. I mean being able to play a version of the Battletoads hover bike level was pretty cool. 😁 A small thing to note is that achievements don't seem to work in the default version of the game, you need to use the beta branch. Garlic is a really fun platformer with charming graphics and goofy animation, really great music, and a fun and unique movement system It also oozes character and charm, with the minigames and cutscenes all keeping me engaged and entertained throughout. Loved it All that being said, I have a good number of problems with it... The first issue I have is the level and enemy design; While the movement mechanics are great, it feels like most of the levels aren't designed with them in mind, and the enemies especially are there to what feels like discourage creative movement. There's key moments in this game where it all clicks together and you have this perfect string and you're in a flow state only for 1 enemy or cheap trap at the very end of the segment to trip you up. Feels bad when most of the game you're fighting this issue. The 2nd problem might be a bit of a weird one; This game, is too long. While I appreciate it from a dollar to value standpoint (seriously this game is a steal), The quality of the worlds feels like it peters out after world 8. Where it then feels like it went from thoughtful, creative design that uses the enemies/traps designed for the worlds theme …

This is my favourite platformer, hands down. It can be brutal, certain sections just feel mean, but the satisfaction of getting through a tough section is liberating. The movement feels great it's just hard to learn. You are given a lot of options and mechanics for a platformer: Air dashes, wall jumps, and the difficult to use but powerful super jump. Expect to die a lot figuring stuff out but once you do it will feel really good. I've played this several times over and if anything it's more fun and satisfying the second time around, once you have a good handle on the controls. The graphics are fun, the game is silly, and whilst I think the humour may be weird to some people it gives the game a unique personality and identity. Overall a fantastic game but definitely aimed at those who are willing to challenge themselves for it.

A hard precision platformer that I’m mixed about. It’s pretty funny with all the meme faces and references. A precision platformer needs to be precise and this game controls just a little loose and floaty which can be really frustrating. Difficulty is all over the place. Some levels are easy and the next level is really hard. The last stages 11 and 12 are pretty easy. The mid stages were way harder. Most of the bosses really suck! They take way too many hits. The final boss is pretty stupid and frustrating. Another downside are the minigames for the hearts. You only get one chance and you don’t get much time to figure out what to do. I could do pretty good a second time but by then it is too late. You need to do good on them for the good ending and secret final level (also last achievement). I messed up on one real bad and got negative hearts so I didn’t get the achievement. You just need positive points. I had to replay half the game again for it. I went through the game much faster but it still took a few hours. The secret final level is pretty good at least. Probably the best level in the game. The special moves you can do aren't needed in the game unless you are…

garlic is the best, hardest, level-based style runner since super meat boy.

I wish I was able to enjoy this more. For part of the game I kept going despite many deaths, as I hoped to find the same "magic" that kept me going with Mute Crimson Plus and DX (my model of hard games that still find the right balance), but at some point frustration simply overtook fun. The game always opens by showing off the ability to bounce on walls, floors and ceilings multiple times but there is rarely ever room to really make good use of that and it is, in fact, one of the "best" ways to just die; what can be seen in the trailers is hardly achievable. Even the mechanic of sliding off walls or slowly climbing them becomes an enemy sometimes, because the character may end up sticking to a wall by a few pixels rather than squeezing into a passage, leading to undeserved deaths. The use of colors is the first thing that gets noticed about the game, as any given screen has got only a few and it uses them greatly, even if, ultimately, many of those limited palettes are the "usual" Game Boy and Super Game Boy ones. The variety of enemies is quite nice and they are all greatly designed and animated, including the consistently ridiculous bosses, and several obstacles a…
