Geneforge 1 – Mutagen is a unique, truly open-ended fantasy adventure in a strange, new world. You are one of the Shapers, wizards with the awesome power to create life. Want a tool, a trap, an army? You summon it into existence. You create mighty beasts, and they totally obey you. Usually.
At least, that's how it's supposed to be. You have been stranded on a forbidden island, full of the powerful, lost secrets of your people. Invaders are also here, trying to steal and master your knowledge. Race them for the awesome treasures hidden here. And destroy the thieves. Or join them.
Geneforge 1 – Mutagen offers unmatched freedom in how you play. Use magic or your deadly pets to crush your enemies. Or, use trickery, diplomacy, and stealth to win the game without ever attacking a foe. Choose between a host of rival factions or just destroy everything. Defeat the final boss, or switch sides and join him. Fight alone with blades, missiles, or magic, or create your own army of custom-made mutant monsters.

I first played Geneforge 1 in the late 00's. I remember being completely entranced by the universe that Spiderweb had created. More than fifteen years later the world of the Shapers is still one of the most unique settings I've encountered. I have enjoyed the entire series numerous times and this remaster is wonderful. I am very much excited for the rest of them. The story is incredible and the gameplay is brought up to Spiderweb's current standard. I've played the original twice, and the remake once, and its very close to my ultimate concept of perfect RPG on the fantasy side (Fallout is the best overall, but not fantasy). It's innovative use of the party system, the spells, the monsters you control, the use of "choice matters", the different factions, the politics, the overall story, the correct balance between going everywhere and guiding the player, it's all here. It's a real great RPG and I can't recommend it enough.2 found this helpful

something interesting about this remake, the first game has that vintage charm and a classic and a true masterpiece. from what I have seen thus far it maintains all the origin charm with better graphics and more modern interfaces. I personally would have like to see a Geneforge 6 but I can understand why the developers wanted to revitalize this classic. Would I recommend the remake or the original, that depends if you are looking to relive the nostalgia, this game is a true vintage masterpiece as its almost a quarter century old, but if you are looking for a more modern experience go with Mutagen, the price is well worth it as its a great game and will easily take 40+ hours to complete. I personally am on the fence but I grew up with games like Ultima I-VIII. I have played the original, so I will stick with the remake, but if I never played either I am not sure.
It's a good game with an interesting and engaging story. A well made classic crpg brought up to snuff with modern hardware.
