About Ghostory

Ghostory is a 2D platformer designed around switching between physical and ghostly forms in order to solve increasingly taxing puzzles. Despite starting off with a curse, this is a light-hearted adventure, with an engaging plot, retro-styled pixel art graphics, and a wild menagerie of puns.

Ghostory won the Best Student Project prize at Game Access 2016.
In human form players can interact with levers, pick up keys, jump, and carry the backpack they'll have to leave behind when incorporeal. In ghost form, they can fly and pass through walls. Clever use of both forms is what will allow them to survive and escape the cave unscathed.

The game comes packed with dozens of carefully-crafted levels meant to tax your logical and lateral thinking skills and is never afraid to introduce new mechanics and unique puzzles as players venture deeper into the cave. Ghostory, despite its simple controls, always remains challenging and keeps offering fresh, often multi-tier puzzles.
  • Complex, occasionally fiendish puzzles.
  • Dozens of unique levels.
  • Smooth animations, and quality pixel art.
  • Engagingly deep plot complete with rather silly puns.
  • Atmospheric music to tie in with the detailed environments of each level.
  • Smooth and responsive controls.
  • Important mushrooms.
In Ghostory, you take on the role of a lone traveler lost in the woods. Drinking water from a weird lake has placed a deadly curse on him, but also allowed him to transform into a ghost and fly - at will.

Thankfully, an old and irritatingly funny lady can help him prepare the required antidote, but she will need a very special mushroom for this. A mushroom that only grows in a seemingly safe cave nearby. Surely, nothing can go wrong now.

This game was a great surprise! Not sure why I had it on my priority backlog, but I had tons of fun! Ghostory is a puzzle-platformer game (more puzzle than platformer) with retro graphics that will challenge your brain. The premise is simple, but really well explored: You can turn between normal and ghost forms, but you also need to carry your backpack with you, and you can only carry it while being corporeal. While in ghost form, you can fly around and through stuff, and you need to constantly switch between forms in order to bring your backpack through the levels. A few highlights: - Smooth difficulty progression. First levels are small and easy, with few different elements. Later on, the levels become huge, with multiple new elements being added as your progress through the story. - Very smart puzzles. You can see a lot of effort's been put into the puzzles. It may take a while to figure out what you need to do, but once you do it's very rewarding. Be ready to spend an hour or more on later levels (there are 28 of them, plus interludes)! - Little focus on platforming. Not sure about you, but when I play puzzle-platformers, I'm not a fan of games that put a lot of emphasis on …

Very nice game. It's a puzzleplatformer. But except for a very few spots, the platforming is not the difficulty. It's about unwinding the puzzles. And those puzzles are great. It sounds easy there are keys and locked doors and switches and moving platforms. You can see everything that is happening. And still it is hard to find the solution. But very motivating. And if you despair, there are help videos in game.

I was interested in this game the first time I saw it because I was imagining how did the developer make a puzzle game where a key mechanic is to shift into a ghost. I was thinking why wouldn't the player just be able to turn into a ghost and fly to the end of the level, and was happily surprised that the dev came up with a very clever mechanic of you can only interact with stuff in game when you are in your human form. It was also a game a was able to 100% without a guide BECAUSE there was no guide but I loved this game so much I made my first ever achievement guide. While, I do praise this game for its mechanics I have to say the parts of the levels I would get stuck on for a long time wasn't the puzzle solving parts, although I did get stuck on some, it was the jumping to a platform I did not think was physically possible. For some jumps I had to try over and over again until I either failed enough to understand it is impossible or until I finally succeeded. Also there is a mechanic to push a box to help you up and sometimes the box would fall into a spot where I could no longer push it and the only way to progress the level was to reset it and make sure I did not make the same …

A true hidden gem of a puzzler that completely wowed me due to the sheer complexity of the puzzles on display. Don't let the simple appearance of the game fool you, each level is meticulously designed and will genuinely leave you stumped. Thankfully, there are much-needed help videos integrated into the game for when you need them while the charming retro graphics and music keeps you coming back for more. Absolutely recommend this title for anyone who likes deceptively deep puzzles that really make you think!!

I love the atmosphere, music and puns so far. The levels are pretty easy thus far, but I only got through a few so far. Will report back on difficulty once I have more time to play.
