About Ghosts of Hollow Creek

Ghosts of Hollow Creek is a story-rich, single-player, 90s-style fantasy RPG with multiple endings to the game's story (roughly 15 to 20 hours to complete). All the characters in the party are customizable by look, name, and class. The romantic interest of the main character is also customizable so the player can enjoy a relationship that appeals to them. Combat is turn-based and each of the available 12 classes is designed to play differently. While the game is focused on the main quest line, there are side quests available and player can explore on the World Map. Weapons can be upgraded, armor crafted, and fishing/cooking is available when Camping. The player can also run dungeons (Lacuna Dungeons) on the side during the story to level up, find gear, gain gold, etc. if they find they are behind in level or gear for a quest area. A Tutorial is also available in-game from the title screen.

For something I went into with absolutely zero expectations, Ghosts of Hollow Creek is actually a pretty good game. Combat is surprisingly fun because the game requires you to customize each individual party members' classes in the beginning, allowing you to mix-match interesting party composition as you desire... or completely break the game with *cough* four gamblers *cough*. The variety of classes, while isn't exactly humongous, is quite decent. If I were to make a comparison, it's somewhat similar to Final Fantasy V's job system, only the classes you choose at the start seem to be permanent (at least as far as I am aware, except for one particular case where you are allowed to change one party member's class). The story is both linear and dynamic, in the sense that while the game really railroads you to follow the path it wants to the point of blocking off areas until you obtain the relevant quests to said areas, it also gives the player choices to tailor the story towards their own favored taste. For example, a NPC might tell you to kill another NPC for some personal grievances, and you can just do as the quest giver wants; however, if you talk to the quest target instead of…

Instant refound Another big dissapointment. Yes the graphics are nice thanks to the RPGMaker sets the dev used. But it shows at every corner that this game is unfinished. There are locations that you can't enter (and reading in the discussions you can't enter them during the whole game). Early on you'll get an airplane and a ship...for what? You can't explore the world...because every new locations says...sorry can't enter. And back to the ship and airplane...the world is so small that you can reach every part of it without them. There are nice bridges you can use...but why shoud you your character can walk through water without problem. Story-rich???? Ha, ha, ha!!! The old PacMan has more story than this game....it is just do the next quest....and maybe one of the very few sidequests (I only found 3). Upgrading weapons is a laughing stock. Each of the few weapons can be upgraded 3 times....guess what..it took me mere minutes to fully upgrade all weapons. Customize your party? Only portrait and jobs....and later on every EVERY enemy cast Death Protection...that means even if you hit it for a million hitpoints it only dies after 3 rounds....and don't hope that grinding would hel…

I'm having a blast with this game. Old school RPG and with a turn based battle system I love. One of the best. I cant wait to keep playing it this weekend.

Really excellent game. The character creation is phenomenal and the best I have seen in any RPG. There are a wide variety of characters: humans, elves, animal people, and even angels. Class selection is also quite varied and includes both straightforward classes and more complex ones. Progress through the story is straightforward, which I appreciate, and interesting ways to show character backstories, such as dreams, are used to good effect. As far as negatives, progress through the game is only one-way, you can never return to old dungeons. Animations when using connecting objects such as doors don't exist, and you just instantly teleport to the other side. This isn't a big deal for doorways, but in one dungeon I interacted with a ladder and suddenly teleported to the top of it, which was jarring. Additionally there is a part of the game where you can
replace one character with another
and there's no explanation of what happens to them, the other character is just
instantly gone
. Overall, this game provides things which are sorely lacking in the current RPG market: character party creation and an interesting, straightforward story. To me, …
