About Gimmick! Special Edition

An old-school challenge enhanced for the modern player

SUNSOFT's NES™ classic Gimmick! returns in this long-wished-for Special Edition from City Connection. Experience a stunning physics-based platformer with updated features like online leaderboards, achievements, a time attack mode, save and quick load, a rewind function, a gorgeous gallery (with cartridges, art, and scanned manuals), and more.

Stellar platform physics with a bouncing star

Explore a physics-based playground that was way ahead of its time. As the cute youkai Yumetaro, use your star-summoning powers to tackle complex challenges with creativity and finesse. Your wonderful star will help you reach hidden spots, traverse cliffs, and pull off trick shots that outwit even the toughest baddies!

Discover a hidden NES™ treasure

Gimmick! was exclusively released on Famicom™/NES™ in Japan and Scandinavia in the early ‘90s. It pushed the console to its limits and the Japanese cartridge featured SunSoft 5B, a custom sound chip that let Masashi Kageyama compose a star-studded soundtrack. Gimmick! remains one of the most valuable (and rarest) NES™ cartridges ever made. The Scandinavian version was called “Mr. Gimmick”.

Uncover secrets in a race against time!

Gimmick! Special Edition features a time attack mode for speedrunners, and completionists can hunt for secrets all throughout the game. Unlock a wonderful surprise by finding everything. For a hard-core challenge, disable all quality-of-life features in "Serious Mode" to crank up the excitement!

Modern enhancements:

  • Achievements
  • Time Attack Mode
  • Online Leaderboards
  • Save and Quick Load
  • Rewind Function
  • Gallery mode
  • Sound test

✦ AI summary

Players praise Gimmick as a genuinely excellent classic platformer with outstanding graphics and soundtrack that deserves recognition as a hidden gem. However, multiple reviewers report significant input lag and occasional button input issues that make precise platforming frustratingly difficult, especially when pursuing achievements, leading many to recommend playing the game on alternative emulators instead.

Fun game, but it's kind of a gimmick.

I wanna start off by saying that Gimmick is an INCREDIBLE game. Easily the best game on the NES/Famicom and just an absolute gem all around. However, I do not recommend you buy this version of the game. This special edition is pretty bare bones, which is fine, since it's a way to finally play an amazing game legally. The problem is that there's some pretty noticeable input lag which is pretty bad for a game where you have to be very precise. Also, I haven't seen anyone else mention this, so this could be a problem on my end but the game seems to randomly 'let go' of buttons I'm holding or Input them multiple times, which just sucks. Considering I don't have any issues like this with other games I think it's an issue with this game. Also you CANNOT tab out of the application while it's running or the game just completely freezes up and you have to close it. Overall just feels like a very shoddy port, and pretty overpriced too for $15. Luckily it goes on sale for $3 which is nice, but the default price is still much too high if there's not really anything new for the game outside of rewind, save states, and achievements. Please please please play Gimmick, do not play this port.

I did not realize that this game was so old! It certainly is showing it's age. It's a fun platformer and a super cool little look at history. I can't believe I stumbled across this series randomly on Steam and never once heard anything about it. Never even saw a stray video essay about it on YouTube. Truly a hidden gem. The reason I wouldn't recommend this game is because while it's a cool little look into the past, I could've gotten out of playing this what I did by watching a short YouTube video on it and going, "Oh, yeah, not for me, I'll just get the second one." Which I did do and the second one is great! I'm currently playing through it on my Retroid Pocket 5 with GameNative and it runs so well and feels so good on a small handheld like the RP5. Highly recommend skipping this game and grabbing it's sequel instead, bonus if you have a handheld to play it on!

Gimmick! is my second favorite Famicom game (alas, we live in a world where Super Mario Bros. 3 exists) and includes one of the greatest soundtracks of all time, which I say with zero exaggeration... but $15 is FELONIOUS for what is essentially a gussied up ROM with some admittedly nice bonus features. Consider coughing up five dollars on a sale (I spent three); otherwise just emulate it.
