About Gimmick! 2

A Classic Challenge Modernized

In Gimmick! 2, you once again meet the green little yokai Yumetaro. Decades after his first adventure he now sets out on a new quest in a world packed with interesting challenges, dangerous enemies, and hidden treasures. The game can be played in either a friendlier assisted mode, or if you’re up for a challenge play in the true-to-the-original “Gimmick!” mode!

Star physics

As a yokai, Yumetaro has the ability to summon and throw a powerful star that not only bounces, but also keeps the momentum of his movement. The Star can be used to activate switches, defend against enemies and even be ridden to get to those hard-to-reach places while exploring the secrets of the world. You can discover treasure, find shortcuts or set speed records by mastering the star's bouncing physics. Experiment with it to unlock its full potential. This is a game with true star power!

A Legendary Soundtrack

The composer David Wise hardly needs any introduction. In his work on the Gimmick! 2 soundtrack, he has both written completely new melodies and remade old classics. The soundtrack was creatively directed by Pelle Cahndlerby and recorded live in Sweden together with Joel Bille.

Blast from the past

The original Gimmick! game was released for the Famicom™ in 1992. It was localized and released in the West - but only in Scandinavia. This, combined with the fact that the game's physics and gameplay mechanics were far ahead of its time, made the game both fabled and beloved. With Gimmick! 2, however, there is no longer any doubt: this is a game that the whole world should have the chance to experience.

Speaking as a huge fan of the original game, I found this to be a mixed bag. It's basically like if you took a few crucial elements of the original and made an above-average Celeste or Super Meat Boy-esque challenging platformer out of them, discarding huge chunks of what made the original game special in the process. It's a fun game with acceptable (if a little "mobile game"-ey) visuals and a great soundtrack by non sequitur composer choice David Wise. The sound is very similar to the soundtrack to Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze, also by Wise, but I confess I wondered at a few points if I was hearing scrapped or unused tracks from that game... Wise is an excellent and decorated composer, and his typical energy and quality is here, but it didn't really blow my mind the way some of his soundtracks do. Maybe that's that Nintendo money talking. It's also just a little weird that Wise was chosen when as far as I know, he doesn't have anything to do with Gimmick besides being a composer who made music for NES games. The new tracks, while good, certainly don't feel like they fit in with the tone of the original soundtrack by Masashi Kageyama, who as far as I know was not involved …

yumetaro gimmick'd all over the place TWO!!! As for an actual review, pretty good! I'm very happy that there's a modern version of this game, because the gimmick (haha) of the star is insanely cool, and having a current-day game utilize it is just so nice. Not to harp on the NES version, it's a great game on its own, but the present-day tweak of not having lives makes it infinitely better, considering how much I was dying when first learning all the levels. I also love all the art and animations of the characters and enemies, the art style is quite cute, and the music is quite good too! It almost feels like I'm seeing what the first game was really meant to look and sound like without its 8-bit limitations. I just love moving around with the star, it feels so good, even when I'm not accomplishing much by doing it. But when I AM accomplishing stuff by grooving with the star, it feels even better. Any time there's some challenge I have to do in order to get a chest or one of the trinkets, it's routinely satisfying when I complete it. Speaking of the trinkets, I especially liked the difficulty provided to collect them (or sometimes even just reach them!) Getting to them was som…

Not a bad game for $3 AUD, but it just feels like it missed the point of the original Gimmick. The main levels of the game were for the most part really boring, and I don't think they even once asked you to do anything interesting with your star beyond really obvious bounces. The secret areas were more fun and challenging, sometimes actually requiring you to ride on your star, which was otherwise totally missing from the main levels of the game.
