Guilty Gear X2 #Reload

A great snapshot of Guilty Gear before the series evolved into its later forms. The fast pace, killer soundtrack, and creative character designs still hold up surprisingly well. It feels a bit rough around the edges compared to newer entries, but there's a certain old-school charm that makes every match exciting. A solid recommendation for fighting game history buffs.

Don't get this if you care about netplay and input lag. This version of Guilty Gear XX #Reload's netplay lobby (ggxxnet) is pretty barren. I briefly joined the #Reload discord too, not very active compared to the +R discord. You wouldn't want to play online anyway due to how bad this PC port is. In old PC port fashion, there is a config app which is like "alright fine, sucks but fine." But you're stuck at 480p and the process of scaling that resolution up to your modern, high definition display causes input lag which isn't very ideal unless you don't care or you're just buying this for the first half of XX's story mode which may already be available to enjoy on Youtube. If you really want to play #Reload online, join the lobby for #Reload on Fightcade! The lobby could use more players because this is a good game. #Reload and Accent Core +R are the best two in the XX subseries. So, yeah, good game but bad port. Go spend money on +R instead and if you still want #Reload, play it on Fightcade. Please... it's lonely in the lobby.

No gamepad support worth using, no support for normal screen resolutions, no sound output. I'm not hand-configuring every input on a gamepad in Space Year 2026. No excuse for not taking five minutes to add native gamepad support.

Do not work, can't get pass the 'PRESS START' screen. Edit: You do, but you need to disconnect the controller for whatever reason. Don't bother with the PC version for this and Isuka.

It's ok, but I primarily purchased it for nostalgic GG content. There's some setup needed, especially if you're playing it on the Steam Deck. If you're looking for nostalgic Guilty Gear, I think Accent Core Plus R is the best choice. For me, the best Guilty Gears are either Xrd Rev 2 or the latest one, Strive.

I feel like if I had played this back in the day I would have appreciated it more, instead I can't help comparing it with newer more modern games with more fluid controls and less input delay like Tekken 4, Mortal Kombat XL, KOF and such. Still, I can't give the game a bad review because even if it is a product of its time the game is pretty solid if you disregard its somewhat janky controls, fixed 640x840? resolution, and lack of subtitles and translations at intro voicelines or some character names and such. Other than that the game has a satisfying roster full of interesting characters, I was pleasantly surprised by how many fighters there are and how different they are both in themes and playstyle. Beautiful, absolutely beautiful handdrawn sprites and animations, stages, all, they have this timeless arcade awe feeling and I would have left a good review just for my respect for the artists and the love they put in the game.
