Gumstein: The Awakening

[h1]Gumstein: The Awakening is a puzzle/platform game that needs a lot more work[/h1] Gumstein: The Awakening is the first game made by PAIN games, a team of four persons. It is a puzzle/platform game, meaning that there are platforming sections needed to complete the various puzzles. The main character of the game is a bubblegum that, after a series of events, becomes alive. Story-wise there isn't a lot more, since no informations are given after the initial cutscene. On the [b]gameplay[/b] side we have to look at two things, as I already said: the plaftforming and the puzzle sections. Beginning with the first, the [b]platforming[/b] feels kind of basic: it gets introduced from the first five levels that are, in fact, pure jumping ones where you have to get from the start to the end while dodging and jumping above different hazards (usually buzzsaws and... bats and snowflakes??). The main problem in this regards are the hitboxes that are quite large and not bounded to the character (which is "round", the hitbox itself seems to be a square or a rectangle): this sometimes makes for unexpected results when jumping onto a platform or avoiding hazards. Really awesome puzzler that stays interesting by introducing new abilities and puzzle mechanics. Has a great sense of accomplishment when solving puzzles but doesn't get frustrating if you can't solve the puzzle.

Gumstein: The Awakening is a compact 2D puzzle-platformer that builds its identity around an unusually versatile protagonist and the creative ways his body can be manipulated to overcome environmental challenges. Developed and published by PAIN Games, the adventure follows Gumstein as he searches for Ruby, providing a straightforward narrative motivation for traveling through a sequence of increasingly complicated stages. The story remains secondary to the mechanics, with most of the experience concentrating on combining careful observation with increasingly elaborate movement abilities. At first glance, the game resembles a fairly traditional side-scrolling platformer, but Gumstein quickly proves capable of considerably more than running and jumping. New abilities are introduced as progress is made, expanding the number of possible solutions to environmental problems. Gumstein can stretch, cling to walls, smash through floors, manipulate or launch objects, and perform other specialized actions.
