Halfway Home

Thought it was a somewhat interesting VN. The issue is I ran into a soft lock bug on day 4(If you visit Timothy in the bedroom twice in a row you become stuck at midnight unable to choose any options) that destroyed my playthrough and a lot of time that I put into it. Which was a big downside considering it's a game about progress... The VN was mainly good for its implementation of the main character's skills, skill checks, and wellness management. The story and characters itself were not very good.

A great free game that surpassed my expectations. If you look past the wacky art and the various typos and bugs throughout the game, there is so much here to have fun with. Design-wise, the game is very interesting and I encourage the dev to work on their art and testing of their future games as they are the sole reasons why this game has remained practically unknown. I actually haven't managed to finish the game yet after over 7 hours, but that is due to an unfortunate bug that doesn't allow me to [spoiler] meet Charlotte at her room at 3 pm [/spoiler] . That being said, I'm looking forward to whatever the creators of this game will make next.

I didn't exactly plan on taking a week to finish this game, but it felt resonant with the game's concept to get a good long rest between returning for the next week of gameplay. Little did I know I was in for the long haul, but rather than match my in-game time of 6 weeks trying to find the true ending, I may have to give up Dean Takahashi style; I'm simply not built to get out of Groundhog Day type situations and on some level I can live with that. I assume the exit opens from getting all five stars, but after running the week several times without finding the fifth grace, I'm beginning to get far too chafed by random scenes being unskippable. The game is in the Heart genre, which is refreshing among the school library. Even though it may be rough around the edges, it's still impressive how much was made for the game with the given deadline. RenPy can be a double edged sword, where on the one hand, scope is defined by the strengths of the engine to deliver the visual novel format, but at the same time, the Heart genre is already predisposed to a large scope due to the expectations for writing.
