About Hans

Hans is a visual novel baking simulator in which you play as an alien dropped off on Earth during World War 1, who bakes magical pastries to help the people in your small town. You can also choose not to make what they ask for, because sometimes their requests are not as thought out as they may think. Just be prepared, because your actions have eight endings worth of consequences!

Bake magical foods for the local townsfolk
In this moody handdrawn game, you have the power to help the townsfolk by baking magical pastries! Will you accept their requests?

Summon aliens to obtain magical ingredients
Enter the mysterious cat shrine and tap into your magical powers as an alien to obtain a special ingredient to use in your baking.

Help two friends fall in love
Addler is interested in their friend, Karl! Will you bake them some magical muffins to give them a boost of confidence and ask Karl out?

Hans is a student project from USC. One of the first things students should be taught in game development is that 3D graphics became mainstream in the mid 1990's with dedicated 3D cards like the Voodoo3 and the ATI Rage. But the students were deliberately mistaught that's it's okay to release obsolete 2D games in the 3D era of gaming... certainly any professional developer seeing a prospective new hire who doesn't even know about 3D gaming probably isn't going to give them a job. Needless to say if an educational institution taught me incorrectly on purpose, I'd ask for my money back. This is a really godawfully bad 2D adventure game with mediocre illustrations for the "art" instead of anything professional. The game narrative is about a furry from space who bakes stuff. So if you're thinking about going to USC for a game development education, now you know all they'll teach you is how to make 2D games for furries, are you thinking twice about where to spend your tuition money? I would. We also have to question what value there is for gamers on Steam when institutions flood the store with low quality 2D video game homework assignments... sure, it might make the students f…

I think it's a very cute and interesting idea, and considering it was a game made for my alma mater's university games program rather than a major professional project, it's definitely an accomplishment! But in execution, I think it falls a little flat as-is. First of all, though I like the premise of "supernatural creature helps out people in WWI setting with their problems", I think it's a weird choice to set it in a fake country in what was a very real war with real death and wide-reaching political consequences. I'd argue that you should either make a fake war in a fake country, or just, well, pick a real-life participating country in WWI. The characters in this have German names anyway, so why not pick Germany, or Austria-Hungary? It's hard to advertise something as set in WWI when it's not set in any actual reality, and it wouldn't have been that much effort to go the extra mile. As for the gameplay itself, the problem is that much of the game revolves around seeing all the results of Hans's choices and how they play out. The reason this is a problem is because all of the endings are incredibly abrupt and don't really describe what happens in them (it's just a still ill…

The game design is so lovely!! Love the whole idea and looking forward to continuation of the world itself!~ It really looks like developers worked hard for it and made it with love :3

Really cute game with nice artwork. The story is good and there are multiple endings depending on which decisions you make. The gameplay is simple but the game still manages to pull you in. You can retry the baking sections if you mess up or want to see the other outcome.
